should I avoid getting a car with navigation?
As I type this I am shopping for a 2009+ 328i.
A few good candidates I have recently found have navigation. I don't really want it but my question is should I avoid buying a car with nav? I've seen a few threads complaining about it, does the nav system break often? thanks.... |

I have Nav/iDrive on both my E91 and 128i and have had no problems other than a few map inaccuracies - which was also the case back in the day with Rand McNally.
The '09 & later HD based system is better than the earlier Nav, but there is no reason to reject a car with either if the price is right. Tom |

I'd do it. It's my only regret. The look seems a little boring without it. Not only does it have a extra wow factor from passengers, it'll help resale too.

NOOOO get nav! try seeing your radio screen with polarized sunglasses on! Its also a lot nicer because you can change more settings easier, ipod control is much better, you can set automatic ventilation etc etc etc. The hump isn't ugly, people just need a reason to justify their car and not feel shitty about not having nav.

When I had a loaner without nav, a few girls all said the interior looked very cheap compared to my e92 with nav. Some love it, some hate it. But, it is more than a navigation system. Having your ipod tracks displayed on the screen and being able to scroll through them is cool enough.
Sometimes at night the nav screen/light is annoying and I just turn it off. It was cool with the e46 nav, the screen would stay black until you hit the accept button. |

I don't have nav in my 3, but have it in my 6. It's the same system as the 2006-2008 3er IDrive, and I prefer being without the nav. The newer 2009+ systems are better though, I have heard.

I have the HD system and being able to scroll through my songs on my iphone is much better. You can set the car to ventilate on its own. The settings are easier accessed and the car look much better with it. The dash looks boring with just the radio

I don't have navigation but it does make the interior look much more "richer" in my opinion, the interior is a bit plain. I think others have argued against it because of the ugly hump and possible outdated factor.

I have the 2008 Nav too, and I would not get this car without it. Not only is the Nav good, but it's much easier to do the radio, car service, etc. It really adds a big element to the car.

The nav makes dealing with a lot of the car's other functions - radio/sound system, door lock setting, light settings, dimmer setting, etc. -- far easier. Additionally, it's a good deal easier to access the HD2 and HD3 variants of radio stations, and you get more info regarding the lists you play via your iPod: elapsed time of the current song, what song you are on out of X many songs on the list, etc. I've encountered no issues with the Nav.
It's a computer you can't program or download to from the WWW and is thus unlikely to acquire a virus. I wouldn't have any reservations about having it.

Except with the newest cars that have a high res screen, it's pretty safe to say that for navigation, a factory nav is inferior to a say Garmin nuvi. Not to mention the factory nav is useless against red light cams, speed cams, stop light cams, etc.
No way would I pay more for a factory nav. If the person is willing to sell the car for less, maybe. |

Would not buy a car that did not have it. Without nav I think the dash looks like something out of an old dodge polaris.

Ive owned both a 3 with and without navi and I personally enjoy having the screen. Not so much the navigation feature but the media is better. I have thousands of songs on my ipod and when i hooked it up to my non idrive car it literally takes forever to scroll all the way up and down to find the right artist. Having the idrive screen makes everything so much easier. Plus I actually like the way it looks.
