Car started violently shaking, check engine light came on....help

I was getting on Lake Shore Drive last night and i was doing around 35mph and then applied 40-50% throttle.

The exhaust starts to sputter and the dashboard starts to violently rumble and shake and the Check Engine Soon (or whatever it says) light comes on.

I get off the gas and all symptoms stop. I gas it again and i get the same rumble and sputter so I quickly get off the throttle.

I get in the slow lane and then 5 seconds later all the symptoms go away. The whole episode lasted maybe 25 seconds. I turned off the traction control and gave it 35-40% throttle and there wasn't a sputter or rumble.

I normally drive my car with out the traction control on because when I go anywhere near wide open throttle the traction control light comes on.

Does anyone have a clue what happened? I have been driving the car around since to see if it would happen again and the car appears to be completely fine.

Any thoughts????

Regards.

You have a COBB AP. Use it. Read the codes, then post.

Same thing happened to me. The only code (cel) that I see is lambda probe in front of cat #2. Must be the beginning of misfires. Just wait until u find which cylinder.

I will check it out with my Cobb AP.

I have had the dp's on for months now (and have the dp fix) so why a problem would come up now as opposed to when i first put them on is kinda weird to me.

I will check for codes on my AP tonight.

BMS DP fix and COBB maps not a good idea, unless you are talking about COBB's stage2 cat code suppression

I have no idea what are you talking about, please explain more.

All i know is, when you get catless dps and take your Cobb off, you will get codes so i got the DP fix.

Could be several things: Injectors, plugs, coils, VANOS, fuel pump, etc.

That was a side note and not an answer to your problem

I thought you had COBB on and were using the DP fix from BMS. If that is the case, then remove the DP fix.

you most probably have a misfire

I am currently running the BMS DP fix while using Cobb stage 2, is this wrong?

Is this causing a loss in performance???

Regards.

Yes it is wrong. the DP fix is changing the signal to make it look like the cats are still in place and that is why the DME won't complain and show you the CEL light. you obviously don't want to be changing the signal, you want the DME to know the actual value coming from the sensor and not a modified one. DP fix is most useful for passing Emissions in some states (readiness), but it's not to be used with tunes.

My guess it was bad fuel, fuel pump or misfire.. but just read the codes.

Ok, I will check for codes tonight.

I will download a DYI for the DP fix, I had it installed by VS Motorsports along with the DP's and i had them label the wiring for me so it should be easy.....i hope.

Thanks!

you dont need the dp fix at all with stage 2.
Even if you run stock it will just throw a cell. nothing to worry about. just clear the code with the cobb ap. Run quite some time like that, no issues with performance as well.
To pass emissions is another story if you need to pass readyness.

The codes listed below are what my Cobb AP displayed:

P29CE
H2F6C
H29F4
H29F5

I have no idea what these codes mean but i do know that the "P29CE" is for a misfire on cylinder 2 according to my AP.

What do you guys suggest for next steps???

Regards

Swap #2 and #1 coil and see if your misfire moves to cylinder 1. That way you'll know it is the coil and not the injector.

Told you the Cobb AP code reading would help

Now just follow the misfire diagnose guidelines that are all over his forum. Cobb made a nice video you can follow.

If i take my car to a BMW service center to service the codes, do you think they will try to say i voided my warranty with the DP's and therefore can't do the work under warranty?

I am going to be bringing me car in soon anyways to repair some damage to my fender (stupid people with their SUVs) so i would just say "I have noticed that my car has been misfiring lately."

Would they then complain about my DP's?

Regards

Google search without the "H" in the code.
