+1

Engine oils are just like "personal lubricants". Sure there are many to choose from, but in the end, they all serve the same purpose as long as you are using it right.

Thanks. I just read the bulletin that states clearly that BMW NA is switching from BP to Shell. When I got my recall work done and asked her about oil changes, the SA at the dealership told me they are switching to Mobile; I did not have the knowledge about the switch to Shell to challenge her statement. I'm sure she misspoke or I misheard.

In addition to all serving the same purpose if used properly, do they all produce the same (driving) experience? For example, does one feel smoother than another?

I went this route today... unfortunately, Wal-Mart only has the 5qt jug, so I had to then go to Advance Auto to get the 6th qt. Ugh!

Then I'd need to measure it. I guess that wouldn't be so bad. But if I wanted to make it work out evenly, I might as well buy 4x 5qt plus a single qt, to make 21qts total, for THREE complete oil changes.

I know, I screwed up today. I needed to actually buy two more qts not just one. I'll be going back tomorrow morning to get the 7th qt.

Warm weather is approaching. This is my first ever bmw. I was thinking to whether put 0w-40 castrol black edge or 5w-30 black edge for my oil change. What do you guys suggest?

We suggest staying with an oil that is certified to the BMW LL-01 standard, or at least the comparable European standard: ACEA A3/B3-4. Neither of those you mention are (to my knowledge) so certified.

Castrol Edge 0w-40 is LL-01 certified (as long as it says european formula on the bottle, which is what Walmart sells).

That's what I put in my car and it seems to be running well. I'll be coming up on 5k miles with it soon and will do a change and get an oil analysis at that time.

Thread says : BEST MOTOR OIL

RedLine or Motul. The rest are suitable and capable but best = RL /Motul are in the best catagory as are some others. For me the N54 / N55 requires the Best for long term ownership to mitigate heat and intake deposits. I would bet any DI Turbo engine would be BEST supported by Grp IV oils with NOACK of 6% or less.
.
.
RL 5W-30 = for low to no mod N54 / N55

Higher Vis if heavy mod

Just an opinion from a rocket builder / aviation old fart.

If you plan on selling your car before 100k -- who cares -- just follow BMW schedule with BMW oil and forget it. If you want 200k -- then RL / Motul is your oil. I use RL 5W-30 OCI 5K

Is this the oil and the mann filter that people use for their bmw? Seems like a good deal. I am going to keep this car so it is going to go well past 100k miles.

Costco does not sell Mobil 1 0W-40, which is the LL-01 spec. They sell 5W-30 and 5W-20 IIRC, which are not "correct". You're probably ok if you change at 7500K intervals.
