e90 330i performance gains?
I am looking at a 2006 330i ZSP, ZPP, Heated Seats, and I was wondering how much of a performance gain I could get with aftermarket parts? I know BMW rates the 0-60 of the 330i as 6.1, but others say that it can do 5.8. How much of an improvement can you get in the 0-60, hp, and torque without super/turbocharging it?

You won't gain much. Figure on 0-60 in the high 5's stock, and you won't really gain much of anything by modding (except looks, sound). IMO, the 330i is powerful enough to be fun, but it's not a sprint car. That said, the NA engine in the 330i is a blast, sounds great, the chassis is absolutely superb, and the car couldn't be a better daily driver.
Here's a good long-term (40K mile) test summary from C&D: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...term_road_test (VanderWerp summed it up for all of us: "This is simply the best daily driver on the market—the ideal blend of sport, luxury, practicality, and excitement.")

yeah, the e90 330i has been tweaked extensively by BMW, not sure, but I'd bet aftermarket mods would possibly DECREASE performance at lower rpms ...

Cams, stroke/port+polish, bigger fuel injectors/higher flow pump, high flow headers and full exhaust, underdrive pulleys, intake, and a tune are common NA upgrades (along with the obvious forced induction path).
I doubt many of these upgrades exist for the 330i considering its short production run but if they did, you could expect around +70-90 hp from all of them (+160-200hp with FI). So if you aren't happy with gains of 15-20hp via a chip, intake, and exhaust consider a 335i or M3. |

Get real.
If you want more power, get the 335. Don’t go whining about how you can’t afford it when you are already thinking about dumping $$$ into a 330. Personally, I would rather have a 330 than a 335, but if you are the power modding type, the answer is simple…

I can't really tell the difference between the 328 and the 330 when driven back to back (although the 325 feels noticably slower than the 328).
On paper: 0-60 is 6.7, 6.3, 6.1 for the 325, 328, 330. Not much acceleration difference between 328 and 330, in spite of the HP numbers: 215, 230, 255 Torque: 185 200, 220 BMW is traditionaly pretty conservative with their numbers. Makes me wonder if they keep the 328 numbers low to make the 330 and 335 look better. bottom line, 328 and 330 accelerate pretty much the same with a stick.

On the other hand, I had a 325i loaner about 18 months ago, and that was a different story - I really could tell the difference. |

At the 1/4 you start to see the seperation more 330 1/4 14.3 328 1/4 14.7 The places though where you will most likely see bigger differences are when there are both auto's, and on highway pulls or on a track where you are in the upper end of the rev range already. 0-60 your right is very similar (except in auto form where the 330 only drops to 6.3 and the 328 goes all the way back over 7 sec)

You would have to assume. I have driven (the snot out of) a 328i loaner and can certainly feel the difference.

now I am mad with BMW. If they were to tell me to wait a yr later to get a 328 with 330's power for near 325's price. I wouldn't get the 325. I've not driven a 328 or 330 yet, but from what you're saying. they are much faster than mine. the 325 is fast enough for me though. I've never do 0-60 in less than 10 sec or pass 4k rpm during normal driving, so I guess it doesn't matter |

Chip, intake, exhaust. Those are about all the choices you have without going into FI territory.

That has a little bit to do with it, but the extra 25 hp and the extra tq really come in handy with an auto.

Everybody is dead on with the comments above.
I own both E90 325i, and 328i ZSP ZPP Auto. There is a noticable difference in the two. My biggest gripe, is how smooth the ZF transmission is on the 325i compared to the 08 328i with the GM trans. I don't understand why BMW decided in 06 all autos got the ZF trans, and in 07, 08, 09 only the 335i gets the ZF trans. I also have a dinan intake and exhaust on my 328i, and it feels faster and more repsonsive than the 330i I drove last November. The 330i has a touch more low end grunt. Awesome car, they should have continued building the N52 with a 3 stage intake. In closing...328i and 330i stock are pretty darn close, and most will never tell. BMW did a good job with N52 updates. I would still rather wait until the Bavarians perfect the new TT I6 engine. For now I'm very pleased with my NA I6. I'm taking the transmission out of my wife's 325i and putting it in my 328i

A) this thread is 10 years old, not much of it is accurate anymore.
B) what? You arent anywhere near 300hp. There's no such thing as an upgraded camshaft for the N52 either. Hangs with M3s? lol... |

I'm not sure that'll work. 335i transmission would probably work better. Or E60 528 transmission (though then you'd also have to retrofit the electronic shifting mechanism... not impossible, but what's the point?) |
