That's unusual. Anyplace I ever read said you had to go to the dealer for this...

I just didn't want to waste my time. Thanks for the info

07 you should be able to do yourself because it's an actual DVD that remains in your system.

I had a 5 series loaner that automatically did this. It amazes me that we dont have this option and my car was produced half a year after that 528.

I have a feeling BMW is doing this to distinguish the 5 series from the 3 series. The 5 being "higher end," it has the auto mode.

I know it might sound crazy, but Acura used to do (still does?) the same thing with auto up/down windows. The higher end cars had auto windows for all 4 windows, while the lower end ones had auto for just the drivers side. Like anyone would buy a higher end car just for that. You gotta wonder what automakers are thinking sometimes.

My old $120 Garmin does this, BMW missed the ball again.

I did find I can dim it under setting, then display, then Brightness.
PITA compared to auto dimming.

find it weird too because my fathers F01 has it. its map version is 2009 as well so i don't think it has anything to do with the map versions and rather the model of the car. baby 3's don't get it.

I guess i need to assign a button for it then.

shoot, i was hoping I would find an answer on how to do this. This is very annoying to toggle back and forth, my CA advised me the automatic feature is "saved for the 5 and 7 series" seems silly. How exactly do u program the button to toggle between night and day? all i can do is have the button take me to the screen where i can check night on/off.

I would like to know the answer to this as well as my Acura has this feature. If the 5 series have it, maybe we can try to look in the 5 series trace file?

Not sure I understand the point of night mode. I can see the "day" map perfectly well at night. What's the point -- is it just that the darker map looks cooler?

Darker map; black background vs. cream/white.. Easier on the eyes, less distracting.

It's 2013, and we still don't have this option. I was looking at videos of an old MB navigation system and even they had the option long before!

It's available on F series vehicles.

Do what I do, set one of your programmable buttons as the toggle.

Yep, that's what I do. I have the AM/FM button for that.

Ssshake back here necroposting to say, it doesn't matter "what the point is". The fact is the sensor is there, and the option is there, so then they aren't tied together is just lame. I've had off the shelf double din nav units from best buy in my old cars that did that purely based on if my headlights were on or not. Weak shit. This is one of these things where it's a zero dollar feature that just wasn't implemented.

Do you know what the little circular cutout/sensor looking this is for in the middle of my 09's CIC screen then? It's located along the bottom, dead center. Looks almost exactly like the auto-dimming light sensor in the rear view mirror.

This function works on my 09, I had to code the feature on.
However it does not work on the gray map w/traffic. It works only on the regular map color scheme.

I have this same little light sensor in mine.

Both my original CCC screen and my retrofitted CIC screen has the ambient light sensor fitted. The CIC is of a 1-series.

Dunno if it automatically changes.
