There's reasons for Nhtsa & Dot to make sure it passes collision tests to be driven on the road. If any car is involved in a bad rear collision, there is a high chance of guaranteed death.

yes...I love it but she doesn't care for it
I also recommended that but she doesn't care for it either she thinks those are ugly mostly safety, secondly practicality

I really think you should reconsider the Mini. The interior of that car is incredibly messy and unergonomic and while it is fun to drive, the ride is quite crashy. The new A3 TDi would give you incredibly high MPG (and residuals) with better NVH levels and also space.
Think you can wait for the 500 or the Alfa Mito?

I plan to surprise her with a car at Christmas because I keep telling her "we can't afford another vehicle right now" but we did see an A3 on the road and she said "yeah, that is pretty nice"

So with that in mind why not combine both qualities of both cars, the fun of the mini with the quality and practicality of the A3 and just go out and buy a Mk6 Golf GTI, I got one for the wife and I can tell you that it's right up there with the mini to drive yet is far more comfortable and quieter on long journeys and it's probably as well put together as the Audi, plus it looks the business too and your wife will love you even more if you get my drift. |

My wife drives a 2009 Mini Cooper S and its really a great little car. We use it for everything. It gets great gas mileage, gets tons of compliments and doesn't take up too much room in the garage
I guess we are a 3 turbo family Good Luck with your choice. Brian

If you're talking top of the line for both, it's a tough call. The A3 3.2 is very practical, but has a nice sportyness to it. The Mini will be less practical as a hauler, but more fun to drive. If you're stuck at the low end of the price range, well, the only advantage the A3 2.0 has is more rear storage space. I think the 2.0 turbo is lag city and as much as everyone says the Audi interior is high quality, it's also a complete snoozefest (do you want black or grey) compared to the options on the Mini. This really comes down to what kind of car are you looking for. Do you want fun, economy and character - go Mini. If you want a higher end (not high performing) hatchback with more cache, think about the Audi.

Surprised the VW has such a bad ranking on reliability. I've owned numerous VAG products throughout the years and never had any worse experiences than I have had with premier German brands. Possibly US dealers ability to deal with problems promptly and efficiently is the problem, I honestly don't know but as for the product itself I would place either Audi, BMW or Mercedes any better in terms of reliability. |

In fact the wife's last GTI which was only replaced that last month had covered 33000miles and 3 years old yet was only ever in the dealers for it's yearly service. My M3 had been in the dealers for small issues on three occasions with the first 6 months, so based on that I would reckon the GTI was better than the M3. |

What's there not to like. Also I can tell you that the 6disc indash unit with dynaudio setup is exceptionally good, thumping bass and good seperation. Plus the wife is averaging 33mpg at the moment. If you like the Golf then best get her a GTI out on loan for a test drive and hand her the keys, I bet any money after 20mins she will have forgot all about the Mini or the A3. |

My sister went car shopping for her first car and i championed the GTi MKV, my mother loved the way it looked too but on the test drive, both of them complained that it was way too noisy and the interior was a bit Hotwheels. I liked it a lot. Especially the fantastic DSG gearbox and it did handle well (but not as good as the Cooper S) but they wouldn't be swayed.

Either it or the Mini is a great drive but it is up to the good lady herself to choose which car she wants, I was only saying that I wouldn't have an A3 over a new Mk6 GTI, the Golf is a superior car. |

Your wife sounds like she has some strong opinions about her car choice so I would probably go with the Mini since that's what she prefers. The Mini is a fun car and it's relatively safe as well.
If you do get the A3 2.0T, get it flashed with APR software or something. Avoid the 3.2; Audi's V6 is lousy. I'm pretty sure an APR A3 2.0T will be faster than a Mini S...still might not be as fun unless you buy sway bars or maybe even a full coil over setup. Who knows if your wife would be interested in all that though!
