Which Porsche would you have?

Am getting itchy feet again!

This thread is a little tongue in cheek as funds don't really permit me to buy, but IF I (you) were to go down the Pork route, what would you go for out of this lot......

.................... I have hankered after one for a while, I drove a Boxster S last September, and keep looking at prices and various models, but daft as it sounds, I am uncertain which model I would go for (if on a modest budget) between Boxster S, Cayman/S, 996/997. I know heart says 996, but head is saying newer model 987 Boxster S or Cayman. I have only just realised that 997s have just about crept into the top end of what I would call an 'affordable' budget but that would be Carrera 2 and probably highish miles.

These three caught my eye:

This is the cheapest 997 Carrera at an OPC - 50K miles and 5 owners - this is an early car so could it have been a thrashed press car? The dealer is keen to sell (apparantly ), it comes with two years OPC warranty but I am would be put off by the high miles and number of owners. Spec is spot on though.

http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/c...nr_=1&caller_=

I love this 996, the colour is a favourite. The 996 C4S Cab is a classic and this is a late car with good spec and with the hard top. A Cab would be my preference. It's got the important sports exhaust. Lack of a decent warranty would be a worry.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...leRegLetter=54

If I went down the Boxster S route, this one is spot on for spec (inc Hardtop) and has the two year warranty for piece of mind. Not a 911, but would still cut the mustard!

http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/c...nr_=2&caller_=

Can I dare to ask what the assembled panel of experts think? early 997, late 996 C4S, decent spec Boxster S or Cayman S?

When you have answered I will go and see the bank manager

I'm tempted by a 2004 996 c4s at £27k

sorely tempted to see if I can squeeze my kids in the back at the weekend!

Edit - tht early 997 gets my vote.

Hmm... I could have had most, Inc a couple of 997 Turbos.... I CHOSE the Box for good reasons and I'm not saying I won't get a 911, but right now I'm delighted with the Porsche.

I wouldn't touch a 996 with a bargepole for most of the reasons you've mentioned plus more!!

A Cayman, if an S, I would have... But 27k for my massive spec 3.2 Box vs 35k for a lesser spec 3.4 Cayman that is six months newer is stupid.

You pay more and get less - ok, fractionally quicker.... But my Ceramic brakes would pull back the difference in no time and I could have the top down doing it!!

Matt, are you refering to the first ad? It's a £35K 997 Carerra not a Cayman.

997 all the way. 5 owners is nothing unusual for a Porsche, you have the benefit of two years warranty, and 50k, that's just run in. The 996 will seem so dated in comparison. And for me the boxter or cayman are in a different class due to being 2 seaters.

I have a similar dilemma next year, and it will be 997 all the way - Carrera S manual!

Good luck in the hunt

None of those models are really rusty enough....

...the IMS issue has continually put me off the N/A water cooled models - even if it is largely hyped internet rumour mongering - there just seem to be too many "my 996 3.4/3.6 needs a £10k new engine" stories out there. The 997 is a lovely car, but I'm yet to be convinced its immune from the same issues. The boxster has the same issues as far as I can tell - guy at work had his engine go pop. You know all this from Hartech etc. of course.

If you're spending that much a 996 Turbo would definately be on my list. The NA models are not really quicker than say an E46 M3, whereas the turbo is a proper fast car at 3.9secs to 60. Engine is based on a different (GT1?) block and doesn't suffer the same issues as the NA cars from what I can gather - same applies to GT3 (8k redline!) but these have only 2 seats of course.

Should add that my take on is one of being particularly risk averse - the problems are probably over-hyped.

PS I heard a rumour that a certain TL had flat 6 related woes the other day....his engine may have been "hunting mightily"

Seems the 997 would make the best sense, that OPC Bolton car is 6 years old next month, it was probably just under £70K new so it is 50% of its new price at 6 years! The spec is great, 19"s/PASM/PCM which I assume are a 'must' to the afficianados of the Pork brand. Running a quick Glass's trade valuation comes in at £27500 for 'excellent' condition. That is some mark up by the OPC, I am sure they would not have given more than the book price. Apparantly it was traded in for a yellow Cayenne!

Part-exchange Price:
Excellent condition:
£27500

Average condition:
£25250

Below average condition:
£22500

This keeps catching my eye (unsurprisingly given the colour!) Seems to have been on for ages (2 months?) but definitely an acquired taste.

There was a fantastic looking Gen 2 Cayman S in white with decent options on for 37k yesterday but seems to have been snapped up already.

Join the club Peter, I'm at this very moment trying to make a decision.

Basically based on my experience of driving and owning Porsches if you want that bit more sophistication, silky smooth engine and better interior go for the 997. Must be a decent car to be offered with two years Porsche warranty imo. If you want a totally focused drivers car which is that bit more raw than the 997 and sounds amazing with a sports exhaust fitted and goes around corners on rails and will flick through S bends with no chassis flexing then go for the Cayman S but you will be down on power but catch up on the twisties? If you want the roof down........Boxster S.

Me being fussy lol.........make sure the Cayman S or Boxster S has full climate control (which is an option) and not just the air con.

I can't decide between an Audi TTRS and a Cayman S! I love the TTRS interior, it's brilliant and the standard spec. is very good, they're rare and there's some fantastic pre-builds unregistered with amazing spec. If I went for the Cayman S I'd have to go for the PDK box because it gets the best out of the Cayman S engine which is now up on bhp and torque but the TTRS is quicker, but the Cayman S with PDK, there's not much in it.

Overall the Porsche is more involving and the steering delightful etc, etc.

Got a TTRS for the day Saturday and then I've GOT to make my mind up.

Good luck Peter and have fun!

On new cars Matt, they're putting a third year warranty built into the price. I got them to take the price of that off a new car as I wouldn't keep it more than two years if that.

VW have made some changes in quite a few areas since taking over.

Oh Peter Peter Peter - you tease

997 gets my vote. 2 year warranty is a real peace of mind option but I'm sure you're physically paying for it in the deal (you've seen their mark-up!!). I'm guessing a third party warranty is too much of a risk.

It's so annoying being stuck between an older car vs newer high mileage car - that's where I was with the E46 purchase - I just spent more for a newer car with less miles on (top tip ).

Was just saying about new ones and fact you can ask them to drop a grand off and remove the third year warranty.

I'm happy with the one I've got ........ except it needs a new clutch, replacement exhaust manifold/turbo bolt that just fell out, oil change, intercooler installing, ignition/fuelling adjustment to 220bhp, roll cage, gear box rebuild, LSD, stainless steel racing exhaust, Lexan rear window, re paint .............
