Bought a couple of iPads
For a wee project.
Opened the box to find the iPad and a small envelope saying download and install iTunes [ ] to setup. No user manual. I know Mac boys are terrified of mice with extra buttons ( ), but no user manual is a bit cheap ... no matter how simple it should be to use. Would like to read about what type of sim card to use in the 3G slot etc. Still sitting in the box while I ponder which PC/Laptop to blight with iTunes. Does iTunes still eat resources, even when "idle" ? Wasn't so hot on my old laptop a few years back. D.

My son has an iPad, just hooked it up to the iMac and away we went. I think they are brilliant, very intuitive.
I did have to go onto you tube to find out how to insert the micro sim though! |

It isn't as bad these days as it was, still very heavy duty compared to some media players but it has a lot of powerful features.

Thanks guys.
Been reading up on how to remove iTunes from my startup. I only want it, when I want it. I don't want it sitting there listening, gobbling up resources. Seems iTunes was really developed for a Mac, where it runs smoothly. Still very disappointed about not even a "quick guide to get you started" being included. I have no idea whatsoever at this moment in time what sim card works, what contract is required, or even where it goes. Bit bloody rich expecting me to trawl the internet for the answer. Poor show Apple. Cheapskates. I was thinking of getting one for my Mum who has no experience with computers (or internet) whatsoever as when setup they are easy to use .... but no chance would she get one up and running on her own. Bet the Kindle comes with a quickstart guide. D.

Bzzzztt
The micro SIM is a complete show-stopper for me.
I've got an iPhone 3GS, but I'll never buy anything that doesn't take the same standard size SIM card which every other phone in the entire world uses. What are you supposed to do when you go overseas and can't put a standard SIM card in it? |

Thanks Guys,
I live in Switzerland ... will have to find something equivalent for the sim card. Will also need to ask my Colleagues in Japan to source me a pre-paid micro sim when I take it to Japan. I know they use iPhones there so shouldn't be too big a problem. Did ask the salesman and he assured me it would work. He'll be getting two iPads back if it doesn't. D.

Plus if you remember the good old days of games like 'Secret Of Monkey Island I & II' & 'Broken Sword', you can get these in glorious HD for only a few quid! |

Mmmmm ....
Found a handy wee program (very light too !) - sharepod. Which means I can move things back and forward to my itouch without itunes. But, used itunes to configure the iPad. And, fair dues, the iPad is very, very slick. Sitting with the feet up on the sofa, surfing and computing away. D.

I was quite skeptical about the iPad, but using it (and you have to use it before you can to judge) you do realise this is another milestone moment in personal technology. I now only use my Win 7 laptop for typing / business docs etc
Dave - agree on how Slick the device is, such a pleasure to use and 'consume' content - its so much more immerse. That's how they can get away with the price tag (cos it is expensive) I too was pretty unimpressed with having to use iTunes to activate the device, shows the iPad has some way to go before it can stand on its own two feet. Kadesdad - yeap my 3 year old loves the device as well and some of the apps really teaching him to spell etc. He also likes the Toy Story App (beautiful) and Tom the cat - funny watching him talk to the iPad then Tom talking back Also looking forward to IOS4, esp Multitasking.

They are great. Just hook it up to a wifi (3g isnt the best way to use it), get on the app store and off you go.
I am a musician and amongst everything else it can do... i have a controller surface for my computer music sequencer. (Ac7 pro). this means you can turn up volume on individual tracks over wifi, put distortion on your guitar, start, stop, rewind, scrub etc etc. hardware versions of these things cost hundreds, if not thousands. Loads of free synthesisers which sound pretty good. A brilliant drum machine - korg electribe. hardware version costs 120, this was a fiver. A full effects pedal and amplifier setup for the guitar, which is very very good for a tenner (amplitube). Needs an irig interface. other good bits Pinball HD is brilliant. BBC news/reuters Uzu - free but a great little mess about graphic manipulation app. Metro news tv guide galaxian/space invaders/pacman bmw magazine (free). kids love the pond apps Whatever you say about apple, they have done it again with the ipad. Loads of people, inc microsoft understanding what they are doing a desperately trying to copy it very quickly. I think this will be much bigger than the iphone and leads the way in the way people surf and do stuff. This will interface with anything that has an internet connection, such as sky+ box, set top boxes, blu ray players etc. Next i suppose is electronic garage doors, washing machines, kettles, curtains, lawnmowers, chairs, sofas? |

One small thing that I like is - click the button and the iPad is on, click it and it is off.
Very handy when you are used to booting big bruising PCs. Just lift the iPad up, switch on - check something on a whim, switch off. Simple thing ... Coding my HTML(5) to work with embedded videos on IE and iPad Safari so that only the correct code/video is shown is another matter ... but getting there. D.

My disabled son has one too, to go with his 27" iMac. He absolutely loves it, it is really easy for him to use and has a great app to help him be understood -its Talk Assist.
It is very popular with the rest of the family too.....in use all the time. I need to download some of the retro games though - pacman/space invaders! |

I've used an iPad for the last couple of days and very impressed I (we as a family!) was with it too.
I'm sure I'll have one fairly soon!

I'm using mine now to type this. It's the best piece of kit I've bought in years. At home I've not used my laptop other than to sync iTunes (which incidentally is much better than the last time I used it).

i've alway been an apple hater but bought an ipad for sofa surfing to replace the aging netbook. on it now. but i was most pissed to have to ruin a pc by putting itunes on it, so i just plugged it into my brothers pc (who is already an apple victim). it only needed sight of itunes and sprung into life. nice bit of kit, but i've refuse to sign up to the app store as they still want all your ccard details, address, colour of underpants etc even to get free stuff. tossers. just reading into jailbreak apps. balls to steve jobs. |
