I have had both, the leatherette did start to crack and wear in a spot. And the Black dye from my black leather jacket started to rub off on the leatherette. Theother issue is it did not breath and after long rides my back was sweating...
Now I've only had the leather for a few weeks so I cant compare it, i like it so far, no issues... But since its a BMW Leather should be standatd, period. Or at least cloth. this BS leatherette is an insult for any car over $35K... |

i think this is simple depending on needs. Example we all know leather has more colors available (red, saddle brown, gray, etc..), and leatherette has Black and biege. now with the new e90's and e92, i notice leatherette feels REALLY good. Better than my old e46 and most people don't know the difference when entering my car unless they know leather has the stiching across the door panel.
Leather looks great and smells great, and WITH CARE can last you a good time. Leatherette on the other hand looks great and smells great for about 5 months (z-9 and z-10 from zaino will change this) and will last you pretty much the length of your car without cracking with very very little care. Leather is over $1000 while leatherette is free. Now of course many will debate on "if you buy a 40k+ car you SHOULD get leather. Well that will bring up another topic. 1-people choose there options mostly because of thier NEEDS and not what others will think. Options like premium, sports, cold weather, etc... Why get cold weather package when you really never skate or ever will? so drop down ski opening in the back seat is not needed. Some find the headlight washer annoying, others like it. Heated seats now theirs a good one. Most enjoy headed seats because it offers that cosy warmth in the winter when getting in the car in the morning or in the summer with AC blasting and 1 level heated seats for that nice feel. but because one gets heated seats instead of cold weather package does not mean the person is cheap. Instead he/she buys what he/she can afford, and will pay and not have parent pay for. You know some actually have to pay for their BMW's and have other responsabilities like mortgage, credit cards bills, cell phone, internet, clothing, etc.... 2-when i see leatherette vs leather threads, it really boils down to simple, lease vs own. If you lease, it pretty much IS your car. only difference is, you will not be a sales person trying to find a buyer when you want to sell it, and you will not take a big hit on the price. If you BUY, you try to put the best quality of anything you buy because it has to last you a VERY VERY LONG TIME. wether it's tints, or anything. If you know your going to own your car for over 5 years, you really want to keep it working good and looking good. Leatherette will be great option. The new leatherette looks and smells great and will last a VERY VERY LONG TIME. If you are leasing, get the leather. It costs more but if feels awsome and breaths well in the summer, and the smell is incredible. If your not a maintnance person (you will not clean leather much) but will turn in car in 3 years, go ahead and get it anyway. It's will do good for those 3 years, after that, well, the next buyer will have to maintain it to keep it looking well. If you are low maintnance and are going to keep the car... do youself a favor and get leatherette. it looks pretty much the same and you don't have to baby it. See, money really isn't and issue yet members continue to think and say people who have leatherette is because they are cheap or can't afford it, or reply with ignorant "if you have a dog that rides with you or babies, get leatherett".In some cases money does effect "some" people. meaning around 1%-10% don't get leather because they can't afford extra options on there new car. But the numbers get's reduced to 1%-5% because about 10% have other more important things in life to pay for than adding extra options like packages. They are buying BMW, and BMW are not cheap cars, but also they are not the most expensive, so people need to come down clouds thinking they have a expensive cars when their are MANY more expensive cars out their. To conclude, this topic is infimouse in e46fanatics, e90fanatics, here, etc... let's put this to an end.. with the vs.. they all have advantages and dissadvatages. What is your goal of having one? MOney issue? Leatherette Impress people and looks? Leather Leasing and don't care? Leather Owning for over 5 years? Leathette Owning with Low maintnance? Leatherette Leasing with Low maintnance? Leather Have color options> Leather don't mind black or beige? Leatherette Additional info is found all over the internet, google.com, msn.com, lycos.com, ask.com, yahoo.com, etc..... the list going one, if it's the texture you can search on the forum for additional. with forums will find many post about this topic, and on a search engine most will redirect you to threads in forums. It depends on what you need your seats and your feel on having. that's all it comes down to. and if it's not enough take a trip to the dealer and feel it out for yourself. Nothing better than that. Own 335i with options and leatherette, and damn proud of it!

Im thinking of going with leatherette this time. I dont have the need for leather. Honestly I would rather spend money on a Nav or something. That would at least give me more joy. hehehe

I am buying my E92 335i...and I can honestly say that the $1k difference between Leather and Leatherette is inconsequential.
I chose Leatherette based simply on my observations… Friend’s 05’ M5 – driver’s seat is creased and worn. Wear and tear is very apparent. The car is always garaged. Other friend’s 2001 E46 – Leatherette looks as good as new…and if you know this guy…you will also know that he doesn’t take care of this stuff. His car is parked outside all the time…because it’s convenient. It’s a no-brainer to me.
