Guess we have to wait to find out, but is the fix just a reversion to pre-29.2 Progman software? If so, choices would be

i) Accept Wastegate rattle (and John Deere sounding engine), but get performance

or

ii) Eliminate WG rattle and have laggy software

unless one were to follow Mr5's diy in the FI forum, but...I see i) and ii) as being most likely for N54 owners. Hopefully, BMW came out w/ a software version that addresses Wastegate noise AND allows for the low-end grunt we fell in love with when we bought these vehicles!

This in fact a true statement and I had confirmed this with sources as well. Will post more on BF when I get specifics.

I just had my HPFP replaced last night and BMW did NOT Upgrade my DMS software ( have Jan 08 build with no updates E60). I asked them about it , and they said BMW did not require that any more, and if they had to do it, they would have had my car for more then 6 hours.

Maybe things really have finally changed for the better.

So what is the "slightly increased engine noise" a result of? Is it because they keep the wastegates open more with 29.2 and up?

Well, the engine is not louder with 29.2+, the EXHAUST is (turbos muffle the exhaust, so the more gasses going through the turbo, the quieter it is...hence 29.2 being way louder than pre 29.2). Either they are idiots and someone who knows nothing about cars wrote the bulletin, or, they mean wastegate rattle might return. That is what I'm guessing. Basically, they are probably warning people the wg's might rattle, and not to complain. Fat chance. I want my $50,000 cake and I want to eat it too. No laggy - no rattly.

I'm not holding my breath.

Plus my car WAS produced in March of 2008. Thus, I don't have the lag--according to the numnuts at BMW. This has been the biggest clusterfuck I have ever seen. You have dealers denying it, regional techs that mysteriously come to your dealer AND won't talk to you about the problems you perceive, and the people you can call at BMW are useless.

I'm over it.

I should make a cool "Pre-29.2" vinyl sticker and put it on my car

+1 I've emailed (one of) my contacts at BMWNA about this information and my 4/08 build. We'll see what they reply with (probably nothing).

And +100,000 to I'm over it. I have better things to do.

This makes absolutely no sense to me??? Isn't the "turbo lag" for those running version 29.2?? Not the early production vehicles....

Has anyone thought that this BMW response is to get the early production vehicles updated to actually decrease the output? I have a Sept 2006 (first run) production of the 2007 e92 335i and yes, this is the same production that generated all the early magazine reviews that clocked 0-60 in 4.8 to 4.9 seconds (track times that could not be replicated in stock 2008 models).

Personally, I would never consider upgrading this this new software unless other e90posters have pre and post track data that show faster lap times as a result of this new software upgrade.

...just my 2 cents.

BMW Acknowledges N54 Engine Turbo Lag

Check it out!

BMWNA has just issued a statement regarding the turbo lag issue that some of you might have noticed with your 3.0 twin-turbo engine(N54). I am one of those people that noticed an issue with the engine, but when I took my car to the dealership, they couldn’t find anything wrong with it.

I’m glad they finally acknowledged the potential issue and that measurements are being taken.

Release

“In an effort to address specific noise concerns, BMW updated the turbocharged engine software on 335i/xi and 535i/xi models built from June 2006 through March 2008. The updated software causes a small amount of increased “turbocharger lag” under certain circumstances and, while not substantial, the lag may be perceptible to the most sensitive BMW drivers. X6, 135i, and 3 Series/5 Series vehicles from March 2008 production onward are not affected.

Release of the new software to restore the original turbocharger response is planned for January 2009, and it will be available for vehicles produced from September 2007 through March 2008 when they are brought to an authorized BMW center for a repair which requires a programming update. Clients with vehicles produced from June 2006 through September 2007 may request installation of the January 2009 software update.

Clients who get this update should understand that there is a possibility of slightly increased engine noise levels under certain circumstances.”

k guys be careful with this update this is the one Steve Dinan told me about when I had the huge problem with BMW usa and Dinan. This software will either not let you piggyback it like Dinans which causes the car to go into limp mode the second the car runs more than 13.4psi of boost or it will log an increase in boost and store it so that BMW knows if you have a tune and are taking it out. We all knew this was coming and BMW was pretty clever introducing lag and then making people want new software that will close the door on tunes. I would expect BMW to be releasing there tune they are using on the 745 before christamas now.

I don't think they can stop you from installing an ECU piggyback, but what's the problem if the new firmware detects them?

if you are operating the engine at a level beyond what it is set up for, then it's only fair that they are not responsible to cover it.
