Its 8 buttons on the centre console near the cd dive. Its new on week 10 build models of the coupe models and all cabro's. It will also be in the newly launched 5 series facelift. The idea is you programe the buttons to any i-drive setting of your choice. ie. you may programme button one so that on a single press it will put on a radio station of your choice, likewise you can programme button two to automatically switch to sat nav and your 'home' setting, button three could be sat nav 'work', while if you have bluetooth button 4 could dial up a telephone no. of your choice..etc etc
It basically means a lot of pre-programming but once done is designed to access your own 8 most commonly used i-drive options/functions by pressing one button.........that's what the salesman said!

I know the new X5 is getting it so i guess all models will eventually. Check with your dealership, but i reckon it will be on all new builds from week 10.
Apparently the revised i-drive will also be faster and have new graphics.
By the way how did you find DMS? I thought about seeing them re tuning the 335i when i get it. Do you know if they do a tuning kit for a 335i?

They have just sold their 335i as they cant crack the code to do the remap so its a no no with DMS for the 335i .

P.S can you post pics of the new idrive 8 button when you get yours

An interesting little site:

http://vlsicad.ucsd.edu/~sharma/Potp...ntro.html#zero

Putting the figures they have for a 335i manual (coupe I think) against a 335d torque curve and transmission (same aero and weight data) gives the following the data (see attached jpegs).

On this basis there is hardly anything in it.

mjh93sa.. great write up.. but I'm curious .. your tables shows the 335d@ 280bhp.. and the 335i @ 276bhp..

bmw state that the peak is .. 335d@286bhp.. and the 335i@306bhp

now there are usually good reasons for descrepancies like these.. i was wonder why..

thanks.. (i'm learning a lot this week.. )

To be more accurate I should have input figures for the 335i, but after dragging the sliders around for the d I got bored

The data for the 335i looks a little low - could be that the figures are supposed to be at the wheel rather than flywheel (ie dyno generated). Therefore I should have disected the curve in the brochure for the 335i as well as the 335d. Then at least the comparison would be good even if the figures of both were artificially high because of using engine ouput rather than measurements at the wheels.

But as the website makes you drag a series of points around on a graph to show the torque it gets boring and tedious very quickly

those figures are very interesting... i guess those revs to change gear at (since they are the optimum) would be when it gears in DS mode?

actually, i have a question about that...

if you are in manual mode, but DONT change gears does it operate exactly like the DS mode or does it push it even further?

as far as i can see it is the same if not similar, so what on earth is the point? your not exactly going to change up earlier than the optimum in manual mode, at which point it does it for you anyway.... so why?

i wish manual was proper manual (i.e. it does NO gearing for you, it just messes things up)...

when i test drove the step i got the impression that DS changed at the optimum revs, where as manual changed after that when it got up to the limiter.

i felt that DS was faster than just leaving it in manual.

could be wrong though

manual seems a bit like an idiots guide to manual. let's you change gears when you want but overrules you if you get it completly wrong, e.g. coming to a halt in 4th i quite liked it after a few hrs test driving.

There's one way to find out. Are you out of Break In period yet?

They may be the same if you give it 100%, but in all other cases, say using 60% throttle, the DS mode will generally change higher than standard mode and manual will hold the gear all the way to the top. I guess.

Yeah, if it changes up when you don't want it to that's annoying but I expect it's clever enough to hold the gear round a corner or on a hill etc. ?

There are actually 4 automatic modes to your gearbox. In 'D' you have 'economy' and 'extreme economy' and in 'DS' you have 'sport' and 'extreme sport'. You select between D and DS and your car selects between the sub-modes depending on driving style (monitoring yaw, braking, steering and throttle). The sub-mode restarts everytime you come to a complete standstill.

So if you drive hard in DS - you will go into extreme sport mode and redline in each gear. Drive a little less hard and you will stay in sport and short shift slightly.

In manual the box will only change up when you are redlining and down when you are likely to stall. Obviously it's not a proper manual and this is one of the reasons (in fact probably the only one) why I haven't gone for the 335d.

now that is interesting NFS... are those sub-modes an assumption or a definate, bmw assured thing? (i only ask cuz i've never seen anything like that in the manual/brochures etc...)

if you know the whereabouts of any additional information on this i'd be very appreciative, like information on how to provoke the sub-modes (specificly "extreme sport" ) - maybe extreme sport is if you drive using no less than the kick-down position or something?

Si.

I think that calculator assumes it's a manual gearbox.

Interesting multiplying the torque by gear ratios as in Simons spreadsheet. You get some HUGE numbers for the 335d.

Regards

Chris
