I had a misfire on cylinder 2. I bought plugs and cps to be safe. But when I pulled out the cp on cylinder 2 this is what I see. Oil in spark plug chamber and oil next to chamber. I do not know what those valve lookkng things on this motor are but it has a puddle in it.

Frick. Searching makes me believe it's a valve cover gasket. Unreal. I've owned the car for a week. And trust me I beat in it at the dealer and it showed 0 symptoms.

I'd just go back to the dealer you got it from and ask them to correct the problem. Since you just bought the vehicle recently they should be able to do something for you.

it's new to you, but fuck, its a 7 year old car (likely built in 2007). It's going to have leaks, these fuckers all do.

anyway, with that, just change the gasket, its like 60 bucks. Or push the dealer to do it, if it was not sold as is.

I'm thinking of just doing it myself. I put dci, jb4 and downpipes on it. I doubt anyone will notice the latter but I dont feel like risking it. Im just going to cancel my powertain and get my 2000 back.

the oil in the hole can only have come from a valve cover gasket leak, since the coil seals the hole.

it's possible the oil elsewhere is just oil spilled from the oil filler cap, which should be right there above cylinder 2.

if it were me, i would let the battle develop a little. Clean that oil up with some brake parts cleaner, it'll eat it up then evaporate. Then check it again in a couple weeks to see how much oil is leaking.

Yep, looks like the leak i had about a week ago. It was covered under my 3rd party warranty as was the oil filter housing gasket leak.

So I cleaned the area really well and put a new coil pack in. As soon as I floor it and I mean literally, pedal down instant limp mode and shaking. Ive had a leaky valve cover gasket on my s4 before and it never instant limped. Could this be a bigger issue.

The valve cover gasket won't make you limp. Check spark plugs, coils, injectors in that order.

So it sounds like a god damn wrx. Definitely a misfire. It sounded better with new cps in and didnt limp until wot. I put old cps in and it sounds awful and shakes. So im going to change all plugs and cps and see if its better. There was no oil in chamber this time. So probably spark plugs bad too.

what plugs did you put in? and did you check the gaps?

also when you talk about limp, are you getting a light on the dash? if so, what does it look like? Icon or SES?

At this point you may as well get pull the codes so you aren't chasing symptoms with parts. That shit gets expensive and autozone codes are free.

Check the electrical plug on the coil pack. Just because the little cap closed doesn't mean the plug is seated all the way... Ask how I know

So I wanted to update everyone in case someone else has the same issue. It turns out when I put the dps in I got the o2s backwards. It's always hard to diagnose two problems at the same time.
The misfires were gone after I changed plugs and cps but it would idle rough and then my jb4 would always put me in map 4 unless I had it on 0.
When I checked codes today it was P0040
O2 sensor signals swapped bank 1 sensor 1/ bank 2 sensor 1.
I swapped em back and all issues gone. Thanks for the help feom those who tried.

This ^ it's really easy to do and inexpensive, if you're not covered you do it. My old 2000 323i had the same problems as yours(funny enough), the oil in the spark plug chamber was from a leak i had on the valve cover gasket so i just replaced at home. Do it now while it's cheap to fix.

Btw, I got brand new cps for 175 shipped and ngk plugs and socket for 80 bucks shipped after taxes. Those seemed like good prices, I hope.

You should get the VCG covered while you still can. It is somewhat expensive when done at the dealership, and if it is not a very difficult DIY, it takes some time still.
