I have an n54 with PE mod and downpipes, and I can tell you that there is a correlation between boost and rasp, which might be contributing to the varying info.

When I'm running pump gas at 12-15 psi I get some "rasp" at the very top of the rpm range (which I think sounds awesome, almost like an e46 m3). With e85 at 18-20psi, no rasp. At stock boost, I hear even more rasp. It's just a matter of the turbos muffling the exhaust.

To test this, set DWP at 0 and keep the car in 1st gear, then slowly accelerate up to redline, staying out of boost. From about 5-6k it is louder than a straight piped civic and rasps like crazy.

Funny, I could actually relate to this; sometime ago when I had my old 335i with OEM PE, my vaccum lines tore and weren't holding any boost. After that I noticed that my exhaust got a lot louder and started to get a nice rasp at the top end. The difference was quite noticeable and it almost had me thinking I got catless downpipes installed overnight for free but without any boost. Lol 😂
Got the vaccum lines replaced and the exhaust was back to quite and subdued.

I think part of it has to do with some people having a n55 and with downpipes the pe mod on an n55 doesn't get nearly as raspy, if at all, as us n54 guys. I've heard it in person on an n55 and sounded amazing but seems like everything I hear with the n54 and downpipes is always raspy.

a lot of kids I guess are used to it and don't report it and think it's normal. some people report it, some have different resonators, and others don't drive in the higher rpms to notice it as much in the cabin to report.

just my .02 and food for thought
I have the sweet 335is exhaust, not that different from the PE, paired with ar downpipes, and an MT to boot, so I'm always winding out the lower gears in those higher RPMs. When I hit 5000 RPMs in first or second, the rasp or flabby duck call bladder sound or whatever you want call it gets super intense, not to mention if the top is down. It's a bit ricey for me and I may end up going the resonator route. I just don't want to get rid of all the good sounds.

Good points...I think those with an E90 who leave their resonators in place would likely see little to no rasp. What is going to be your setup?

True, boost would definitely play a role. How are your mufflers modded exactly?

i had an extra muffler I started to mod about a year ago and then never finished. I didn't have the correct type of welder available and just never went out and got it done. at this point I'm just waiting for the vrsf catback. unfortunately it's taken a lifetime to complete but i think it's one of the least raspy sounding options out there for the n54.

The perforated straight pipes were replaced with solid pipe in both mufflers. Packaging was kept in and split 50/50 for each side.

Later on I threw on some 4 in double wall tips and it actually lessened the rasp a bit.

I've got an MT but this seems to jibe with my experience. I'm pushing 20 psi on E60 and while I get some rasp, it's nothing compared to just a simple friendly neighborhood wind-out acceleration through first and second without boost. Christ, that thing is loud. I don't know which is worse, the rasp or the Civic drone. Probably the drone, but AFAIK, there's nothing one can do to get rid of it. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Honestly if I knew I was going to cut all cats and mod the exhaust I probably would have left my resonator but hey it's a little late for that

Got my downpipes installed and the exhaust purrs!!! A lot more aggressive exhaust note and the rpms are more pronounced. Cold starts are noticeably louder and 1st gear has a little bit of rasp around 5-6k but it's not the rasp that caught me off guard but the sudden volume increase, it's almost as if volume went from 5-10 real quick. Lol
Seems like 2nd and 3rd gear rasp is almost non apparent.

Paid a cool forum member to get mine installed but it was an easy and simple install that I could've done at home with ramps if I knew better. If you're handy with tools, save yourself the money and do it at home. May take about 3-4 hours.

Lol it's a simple bolt on, just search downpipe install on YouTube and you'll find a tutorial.

Hey buddy let me know if you find a shop. I been looking too. I found a few shops near Kearny Mesa but then yelped them... Found really bad reviews.

Let's tackle this and maybe we can get a good price if the shop is doing two instead of one

Hopefully you guys can help me out here:

I recently bought a e92 and the stock appearing exhaust is louder than my old e90 I had.

I noticed from looking underneath on the driver side pipe before the muffler there is a clamp, and in between both mufflers there is a clamp. Nothing on the passenger side muffler.

I looked and felt around for welds or anything abnormal besides the clamps and didn't come up with anything.

Car is completely stock.

One thing I must say is the exhaust note sounds much better than the E90 did. Similar tone just louder. Both had the exhaust flap unplugged for extra loudness.
