My iPhone 3G DOES charge with 6FL
I have an '08 335 coupe w/6FL and my iPhone 3G does in fact charge with the Y cable that came with the car. I thought all along that this wasn't the case but sure enough, it does charge just fine. Did I miss something? Is this true for anyone else?
As expected, the phone does not charge in my Bose dock but I bought an adapter (Scosche) that cures that as well. |

The USB jack in the glovebox for uploading to the new GEN 4 I-Drive is also powered and will charge an iPhone just fine. However, the manual says that this is a no-no.
For what it's worth.

Thanks Tom - I never knew this. I thought I had read that 6FL doesn't charge the 3G iPhones. The Y cable that comes with 6FL doesn't connect the phone to the shark fin antenna though, correct? Thanks again.

In Bluetooth environments, the phone uses its own antenna.

I was always under the assumption that you needed the phone adapter / snap-in module to be able to leverage the shark fin for phone reception.

For a direct-wired solution, yes.

What PN# 6FL are you guys using (which number is etched into the junction box on the y-cable)? Mine ends in 96 and is definitely NOT charging my iPhone 3G, despite the phone showing a lighting bolt in the battery icon. My reason for saying this is the battery doesn't ever actually gain capacity if I leave the phone connect, it just drains...... despite the phone claiming its being charged.
I know this is an OLD thread, but I'm desperately searching for a way to get my '09 335i to charge my iPhone 3G without some crazy cigg lighter adapter! |

Hey pcmike -
The part number on my y-cable is 0 440 796 so I'm guessing it's the same as yours. I can't imagine that yours is not charging if you're getting the charge symbol on your phone. Just as a test, did you try hooking up a partially charged phone and drive around a while with the phone shut off to see if it gains battery capacity? There are also a couple of free phone apps that show you your exact charge level you could use for more precise monitoring. |

I haven't tried it with the phone off, just with it on and watching the percent battery meter. I'll try it with the phone off today and see if there is any difference over about an hour.

What pisses me off is the 6fl in my 09 328 i DOES charge my wife's 3G but will NOT charge my 3GS. I am considering the cablejive adapter and extender cable.

BT and GSM/3G are different radios, they use different antennas. That said, even if a snap-in adaptor is in use, there is no antenna pin in the iPhone docking connector. So, no matter what, the iPhone always uses its own antennas. Other phone makes/models that have an external antenna connector would indeed use the shark-fin antenna.
