how often do you check your oil?
i religeously end up checking mine every other day just out of paranoia really.
just in the past having had ' tuned performance engines' in other cars which i paid much moola for, i was always checking the oil. the last thing i wanted was having paid 1500 quid for an engine not check the oil and they run the thing dry. Same with the 335d engine, a great engine which performs so well, i really dont want any mishaps with it.. anyone else check there oil regulary?? a few people i know who have new cars never check and then just wait till its used a load of oil and the pressure light comes on then they check after its too late and the damage has been done only to overfill the thing and stress the engine even more.... im sure many new onwers are liek this just hope alot of bmw owners arnt?! carl |

BMW's actually have a low level sensor as well as a pressure sensor (at least my old E46 does). Therefore even in the event that you don't check the oil you should get a warning before you get the pressure drop.
Doesn't stop me from checking regularly, but does give a small comfort factor.

I don't think my E46 convertible has a low level sensor. In the first few months of owernship (probably because it was ragged as an ex-demo) I had to put loads in. Haven't checked it for months now but I probably should before I part-ex it next week.

was the only reason you knew you had to put some in because the oil light came on then?

No - checked and changed before it came on. A low level sensor would be good - does E90 have one?

Certainly the petrol ones would have as they have an electronic level sensor and no dipstick I believe.
Don't know about the diesels thought. Surely they wouldn't take away useful information like that, it would be like removing the temperature gauge

The X5 3.0d certainly has one and I'm pretty sure the E9X six cylinder diesels have them as well. The three E46 diesels we had were all equipped.

Thought there was a big hoo-ha on here somewhere cos they dropped it from the D? I read that somewhere. Not sure why.

Rumour is that the 3.0i N52 engine has very erratic temperatures and BMW felt people would be concerned of the temp fluctuated too much. The e60's do have illuminated dashes near the redline which switch off as the engine warms. These effectively reduce the 'visual' redline on a cold engine. E90's don't get this. As to oil level - the petrol engines check this themselves - no dipstick. |

It's entirely possible they they decided to save a few pennies, though it would seem rather obtuse. I guess the temp gauge seemed to be a good bet to loose when they set out the simplified dial set for the E9x as they can do all sorts of protection with the electronics and I bet most people never look at it anyway. However, a moving redline would have been nice if only to confirm when it had warmed up. Let's face it all we want is a cold / ok / hot / overheat indication. We don't need to know what the temp is, which could be done through the OBC without worrying about fluctuations.

I check my oil level every few days
AFAIK dealers have told me that the guage reports OK most of the time. It will only ever tell you fill up 1ltr at the most. Most new cars will burn some oil regardless if they are thrashed or driven lightly. Some manufacturers have very loose expectations on what is acceptable usage. My lease company quoted me 1ltr per 1000 miles!! The engine should stop drinking oil after sometime. My 320si has done nearly 20k and consumed one litre of oil so far. The current guage reading is nearly at low level. I won't be topping up as it goes in for its first service next week. Its already showing 800 miles over the service indicator. The wondered how CBS affects warranty, apparently BMW don't mind the service indicator being 1000 over. |

Had to put in a litre a few thousand miles ago.... Now on 18000 miles... 1st oil service on Tuesday (now 300 overdue - but the service rep said that up to 1000 was OK, when we were deciding on a date on which they could pick it up and drop it back.).
E90 320D has... Conventional dipstick (part of engine used to check the oil, NOT the driver!), Low oil warning, no temp gauge for either the engine or engine oil. |

Reminds me of one of the aviation funnies..
Pilot report: "Slight oil seepage in No3 engine" Engineers report: "Oil seepage No3 engine normal. Engines 1 2 and 4 lack normal seepage" |
