branabolic, I agree. BMW is about connection to the road and the stock shifter is a bit barrier to that in my opinion.

Have you moved that knob around in gear? Mine was very sloppy and lose!

Orion, thanks! I have so many mods to my drivetrain that I am enjoying now. The break in period is killing me because I am ready to drive this baby!

Everyone I met at UUC was very knowledgeable, highly recommend the ssk. by far the best mod I have done to my car!
We are lucky in the BMW world. The car is an incredible machine stock, but at the same time there is room for improvement. I agree this is a "must" mod.

CDV is long gone on my car. It helps, but I am now convinced the luggy stock flywheel is the cause for a lot of the rev matching jerkiness that comes with this car. At around 35 lbs it really hurts the drivability of this car IMO. It is quiet, but it hurts the driveability.

I don't think UUC change the stock rubber carrier bushing, so some people still experience slop even with UUC SSK and DSSR. RE SSK includes a modified stock carrier and Delrin carrier bushing which helps reduce the slop. IMO the stock rubber bushings should be replaced especially for cars with high mileage, Bimmerworld has the RE delrin bushings for $25.

Edit : also if anyone is looking for sway bars ask UUC about them. Their Swaybarbarian bars are incredibly well made and im definitely going to pick up a set when i get some extra cash. Really everything that UUC makes is incredibly well designed and manufactured.
It seems the BMW SSK is just a bandaid fix, when the UUC is the real deal fix.

Thanks also to FBIS for the great write-up that describes exactly what I'm experiencing as well - I have the SSK+DSSR since about 6 weeks ago and it's truly great.

@FBIS: I still have some (albeit little) slop when in gear. I read on the M-Forum that sometimes the washers used by UUC are undersized which induces slop - do you think that's the cause?

Alpina_B3_Lux
Alpina, thank you for the kind words. I wonder if you made sure the washers did seated properly under the slip on clips? I was very careful to seat the DSSR assembly properly.

I think it is definitely doable, but you would need proper lighting and use these pictures to feel around. Knowing what you are feeling for would be a big help. I think lowering the rear transmission mounts to tilt the tranny would be a huge help!

I still have a lot of in-gear slop with the DSSR. I also have 37k miles on my car so maybe that's why.

The Evo3 + DSSR is a great upgrade though - one of my favorite mods.
NiVeDh, I wonder if you got the washers under the clips properly in the reinstall? I have zero slop now.

FBI....glad u picked up that one, you'll enjoy it. UUC makes great pieces, lately their clutches seemed to be less than perfect though.
Sniz, I think I will be enjoying it a lot in the coming weeks. I just need to break in the clutch before I can really enjoy things.

I couldn't get one of the yellow washers onto the transmission side and get the circlip over it so I left that one out. Maybe that's why I still have some slop. I really don't want to get back under the car on ramps to attempt fixing it at the moment.

Awesome!!! I love my UUC SSK and DSSR!!!

I conducted a GB last year, as it was quite challenging, it all worked out pretty well. Some delays, some issues, but that was to be expected with UUC coming out with the DSSR to go along with the SSK. The gang at UUC have been great and they always came through when it mattered. I would recommend this set-up to everyone who has a MT!!

Great review Former Boosted, as always...enjoy the new shifting experience!!! UUC FTW! Rob, John and Arjun are as good as they come...IMO!

As JPSimon said, time to get a new shift knob!! UUC has some great ones!

Cheers

No its because we didnt replace the actual bushing in the shift knuckle at the same time. the DSSR alone does nothing but reduce the amount of wear that the transmission puts on the bushings. I talked to john about it and he kept saying it is one of the most missunderstood mods they make.

This is why I have yet to replace the selector rod in my car. I most likely will once the bushing needs to be replaced.

Ok cool that makes sense. I'll probably need a new bushing then. Does UUC sell them?

Nice right up man.

1/2"-1" slop while in gear is not normal. My car and many others I have dealt with don't have that much slop if any. The stock shift knob, does suck however.

Gear noise? You shouldn't have expected any as the BMW has an external linkage assembly unlike the IS300 you are used to which the shifter resides directly in the transmission. The only time the IS300's would eliminate that was with the V160 swap (and as you know, that's not common) So yes, on a car like that, there will be syncro whine and noise through the shifter.

Great write up though as always.

What clutch did you end up going with?

I like the idea of everything but I installed a UUC SSK in my e46 M3 and I honestly liked the sloppy shifting a lot better.
There was something about the slop that made it easier to throw in gear but I'm curious if the install was correct.
Does this make sense or am I in the minority?

I guess my question is...Does this SSK make it easier to get into gear or does is just make the throw shorter resulting in making it harder to get into gear?

They are indeed back ordered. Rob said it would be a couple more days.

Since I live in Germany, I've got to email. It is annoying to bridge the time difference for a phone call.

Malek, I should have the clutch write up soon. I will say that it is not like any clutch that is on any 135/335 at this point. I suspect you will know what that means.

Mr. 5, the problem for me was that the distance from 2nd to 3rd was too long and I missed the shift from time to time. The other issue was that the "slop" sometimes feel like I couldn't predict the gear gate location at times. You obviously know fast shifting is important these problems hindered me. Now I feel the shift location is predictable and the shorter distance makes it easier for me to shift quickly.

With the car on a lift, the SSK / DSSR is very easy. I have tried to organize mods based on the time they made the most sense.
