If you notice immediately after turning the car off there is a sound of a pump running for a minute or two, that may be for cooling the turbos after shut down. Perhaps someone else with more specific knowledge of this engine can confirm that, or explain what that sound is. You certainly aren't going to cause any harm by letting the car idle for a minute before shutting it off, and in the old days that was a common recommendation with turbo cars.

That sound is something else....I had a 4 cyl. Altima rental on business, and it had the very same sound upon turning the motor off....

absolutely not...Our cars, like most modern turbo cars have an electric coolant pump that circulates coolant/oil through the turbo to insure that hot oil does not sit in the turbo. If you look at the sticky, they mention this under the "turbo" section. So feel free, to hit it and quit it.

Wrong. The sound that you hear when you turn ours off is the electric water pump continuing to run to make sure that the turbos cool off.

So, the coolant pump circulates oil too? That's one of the reasons why I drive my car easy for the last mile or so if I've been getting on it hard.

Are you seriously doubting the BMW engineers and researchers that they wouldn't have the foresight to think of this?

Who are you referring to? I don't see anyone doubting BMW, but you should realize that your water pump isn't going to continue to cycle oil through your oil lines so driving the car easy for a few minutes after some hard driving isn't a bad idea either.

Agreed.

Don't forget BMW failed to put oil coolers on a lot of the N54 cars.
