Three warning lights in as many minutes. Got BMW coming out now. on the phone, they mentioned that it sounded like a coil had gone.

I ended up putting in Tesco petrol this weekend, and know it's caput! I was using BP/Shell and everything was fine. has anyone else exxperienced this when they use different petrol companies?

will let you all know how it goes...

regards
Bren

Hi Bren,
I used Tesco petrol in my old car and had nothing but trouble, BMW gave me a brand new 320 (on loan) with a tank full of shell and it was prefect, until I used Tesco petrol, then it started hesitating!
In my new car I will only use Shell & BP since!

Update:

After my 3 warning little episode, having called BMW direct, they duly sent one of their engineers out. He pulled the car apart for about 2 hours, took it for a test drive, managed to repeat the fault, then told me it was definitely an ignition coils. he then swapped the problem one out, and so far (touch wood), I haven't had an issue.

It definitely runs better, but i am now so paranoid, i wouldn't want to say 'perfectly'.

Incidentally, I asked him about the petrol coming from ASDA or Tesco, and he said that he had experienced cars that had issues with all brands of petrol, and wouldn't say that the supermarkets were better or worse. what he did say though, was in his experience most petrol related issues, had been from water moisture getting in to the petrol, where the station didn't properly clean their tanks out. He did advise that I should only use well known brands or stick to the big 4 supermarkets because of this.

Will keep you all updated on the cars performance...

Apologies for this being a first post but it's taken me forever to get through 20 pages of this thread

Sounds like the 320i is a problematic beast for many reasons but the worst problem seems to be engine control lights coming on with the resolution of changing injectors, software or various sensors.

My wife has a 2007 320i SE Touring with an auto box and we're somewhat disappointed with it. She struggles to get 27 mpg, the steering feels rather odd (sometimes over assisted, other times under), the ride is terrible and the engine feels gutless.

I'm just wondering if we have a 'milder' case of what the rest of you guys have had to put up with. On the cars first service, I asked the stealers to look at it and the usual answer came back - checked all the usual systems and no fault found.

So I'm asking them to have another look at it but what's the advice for taking this further ? What is PUMA that's been mentioned in this thread ? Would really appreciate some help as this is our 6th and most disappointing BMW we have ever owned. Thanks in advance.

Well, what do you know. Engine light on again today!

called BMW. They came and said that this time it was a damaged spark plug...

Changed now, so let's see if I can get past a week without a hitch...

Well got it back. (24 hrs) "Reset adaptions and tested" whatever that means. Its still the same... The loan car 320i 58 plate has the same hesitation problem. It has obviously not been 'linked' to technical. Getting really annoyed now, will speak to CS in the morning.

Another update:

had the light back on yesterday. BMW came out (again) this morning, did the usual tests and said it was now another cool.

They seem convinced it's the coils, but with 11 lights so far, I'm getting a bit peeved

So far, 3 lights in 3 weeks, see what we can do in week 4...

regards
Bren

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that mine will continue to be unaffected. Are you enjoying the replacement, Chris?

Hi Mate - yep - very pleased. Its really only when initially pulling away that the diesel makes its presence felt, with the auto transmission the refinement is really pretty good. Goes well, and mpg over 40.

For reference, same driver, usage, roads....

E92 320i Auto - average 31mpg
E92 320d Auto - average 41.5mpg

...with price differential on fuel it probably works out about the same cost(cba to do the sums!) but at least I have an engine that works properly, and I dont have to fill up so often!

Update and reminder of the problem.
Hesitation under load at low revs.

I cant remember now but is this one of the problems other owners had?

CS:
'Mr customer, perhaps this problem is a characteristic of the car'

Yeah right, what happens when I come to sell it and a prospective punter says 'that's not right'

They are going to speak to the dealer again and come back to me.

DO NOT accept that bullsh1t!

Yes, it is definitely one of the problems. They tried to fob me off with "characteristic of the engine".....when I asked them if this was the case, why they had spent 4 months trying to stop it happening, they had second thoughts.....

This is awful - So howcome BMW have been replacing the cars? Is this your Dealer or BMW UK Telling you this? My next step would be one of these - or all 3 depending on your blood pressure?

Complaint to BMW UK
OR
A very snotty letter to the MD of the dealer
OR
Your solicitor

It makes me so angry when people have spent all this money on what's supposed to be a high class car renouned for quality & reliability!!!
