#11517546994 Description: RMFD WATER PUMP (to 06/06) No longer available since 2007-02 Superceded by 11517563183 #11517563183 Description: RMFD WATER PUMP (to 07/08) No longer available since 2008-04 Superceded by 11517586925 #11517586925 - Currently available Description: REPLACE COOLANT PUMP, ELECTRIC Interestingly, this water pump part # is 0.02 lbs heavier than the previous two. No idea what that might actually mean. Edit: realoem.com link http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...=11&fg=35&hl=5 penskeparts.com link: http://www.penskeparts.com/DiagramsM...ts=11517546994 My belief would be that if Penske Parts lists the part as "no longer available" and could not sell it, I would hope that BMW stopped using those part numbers in manufacturing by the dates they were no longer available, if not sooner. So my theory is that if your car was built after 07/08 and has a non-turbo I6 (N51/N52), you should have the latest water pump part # installed in your car. I HOPE this provides some peace of mind for some of you out there! It's unfortunately just a theory and I have no real way of confirming if it's 100% true right now. I don't know for sure either if BMW really made improvements between the part # revisions, though I would hope they did.

Data from 423 responses
I have compiled initial statistics based on 423 responses so far.
The general trends have not changed significantly since 300, so it seems like we may be plateauing a bit with the numbers. Plot of estimated failure rate during specific mileage intervals: Plot of estimated failure rate before a specific mileage (perhaps more interesting to some of us):

62k miles, and Thursday, Sep-5th, I joined this illustrious water pump+thermostat replacement club.
First repair on the car since I bought it in March, 2012 with 40k miles on the odo.

86K and WP still lives, but here's the rub. When I bought the car last year, I bought it without any documentation from the previous owner. That's 6 years that's completely blank. I'm hoping maybe the pump was replaced, but who knows? As much as it sucks though, if it goes out I'm ready to replace it.

Mine was still running, with a strong return flow in the overflow reservoir, when I had my RBs installed at 100k miles. I replaced it at that time as a preventative measure. The thermostat was on it's way out though; randomly failing open.

Forgot about this thread. water pump died at about 49K miles. I was actually at the dealer when it died so I let them replace it with the thermostat since I have an extended warranty. I was out the door ini 3 hrs total

Revival
Hi, It's been over a year since the last plots, and I am just reviving this thread to a degree to all the newly failed people may be aware. Continue to post about your failure. We have another ~60 data points added to the graph, which seems to have correctly what may have been an abnormally low failure rate between 105-120k miles.
My car now has about 67k miles and so far, so good... [[[[ Update 8/28/2014 ]]]] Everyone, I have compiled initial statistics based on 491 responses so far. This gives the failure probability and the +/- 95% confidence intervals for that failure rate. Everyone help out by voting! Also, there will likely be a skew towards more failures given that many people with healthy water pumps may not check out the thread. Plot of estimated failure rate during specific mileage intervals: Plot of estimated failure rate before a specific mileage (perhaps more interesting to some of us): (I didn't really propagate the uncertainty correctly, so the uncertainty is probably larger at higher mileages)

2011 328i w/ 55k on it. although it has not failed yet, I have experienced clicking noises from the pump while driving. have a pump ready to go, but just might replace it anyway, and save the old pump for an emergency unit.

Original pump died today with 121,6XX miles, 65k of which were tuned with a WP over speed to cope with the extra heat. Ordered a new pump from the dealer and will install this week. Thermostat was replaced at 114k after throwing codes.

My WP died at 119K. As a preventive measure as most do, I also changed my Thermo. My coolant reservoir unfortunately had also cracked and spat fluid freaking everywhere, so tack that on. Took it to a BMW indie as I don't DIY and all said it cost me slightly north of $1500. I know, OUCH!, but still, I knew it was coming and prepared for it in advance.

Had my '06 330i serviced today including a scope and came back with a fault code for the WP (speed deviation outside tolerance). So is its death imminent or have you guys known these pumps to have a reasonable life after showing a code? With 100K miles, and the fact I use the car to travel a couple of hundred miles once a month for work........I'm thinking of getting it done. Quoted $1K including thermo and tax.
