If you left your car running, the waterpump would just be running anyhow...
Don't think of it as more wear on your waterpump,
think of it as less wear on your engine (and gas card!)

How is this less wear on the engine again ? I mean idk I'd rather freeze a little than have my water pump running a little longer when I'm not even in the car

Water pump on? Will it cause any premature wear on the WP? Shit I might not use it as much. is WP covered under CPO?
Premature wear? For those few minutes running compared to all the hours running when the engine is actually turned on?

Shut the car off and it keeps the heat circulating for 30 minutes (I think?) because it keeps the water pump running.

It's pretty damn awesome over the winter.
If I recall correctly, the function will work so long there is "heat" left in the cooling water. So when your engine is completely warm (operating temperature) the function will work longer than when you only just started the engine. You typically need 10 miles to reach full operating temperature. Note that while the water temperature may reach its operating temperature sooner, the oil is not yet at normal operating temperature.

True...but I barely drive my car its been 7 years and 52k thats about 7.4k miles a year. Those few minutes lets say 30 min times 2 a day is an hour times a week 1 times 7 hours times 4 for a month is 28 hours times 4-5 months is 112-140 hours of unnecessary movement for your water pump. This is an estimate could be more or less.

From the '07 E90/91 manual:

Residual heat
The heat stored in the engine is
used to heat the passenger compartment,
e.g. while stopped at a
school to pick up a child.
The function can be switched on when the following
conditions are met:
> Up to 15 minutes after the engine has been
switched off
> While the engine is at operating temperature
> As long as battery voltage is sufficient
> At an outside temperature below 77oF/25oC
The LED is lit when the function is on.
As of radio readiness, you can set the interior
temperature, the air flow rate and the air distribution

Its nice that you can code this feature if you dont have Idrive... because with Idrive you can set it to go on at two different times when the car is off. More than that will drain your battery.

So do you hit the rest key before turning off the car or afterwards? Do you have to turn it off when you get back in or is it kind of automated?

I think you are mixing up "rest" with the timed ventilation option in idrive which pulls in outside air and is intended to reduce interior temp on really hot day.

If you have an older model and have the REST feature, you can enable the ALL function without coding or other highly technical patches. I simply just join the two temperature control knobs together with a rubber band. With this simple fix, you have both the ALL capabilities and the REST feature also!

But why is everybody so worried about the two temperatures? BMW allows you the option for two different temperatures on purpose! If you drive long distances, for example, you'll notice that your passenger typically is cold sooner than you. You are actually "exercising", therefore are "warmer" then the passenger who simply sits still. Me and my girlfriend typically have 2 degrees F difference between ourselves.

When she gets in, and uses her set of keys, the temperatures change to her preferred setting (and so does the seat and mirrors).

Anyway, my point is: why don't you leave the setting of the passenger to a different temperature? You're not sitting there! You're side has your temperature. Why worry about a passenger that is not there?
