I didn't damage my car but really wanted to go to the Lci Halo headlights. I went from Pre-lci halogens to Lci halogens (which have the Halos) I have not fitted them permanently yet as I plan to do a projector retrofit but I have tested both headlights and they are a simple plug and play. They show no errors with engine running or just ignition on even with the 6k led angel eye bulbs that I bought. (And look 10 times better). There is quite a bit of info on the site about this already including people who done a pre-lci halogen to lci xenon which requires a lot more work but its all here.

U need to do the pre lci to lci conversion. I dnt think any of the pre lci headlights have the angel eyes. The headlights are identical but the lci has the angel eyes which is what you want to achieve. Not sure where your from but I picked up the lci headlights for €350 in a scrap yard in the UK so there not very expensive.

Ya sure you could go the aftermarket headlight route but I'm not sure if they would be 100% error free. From what I've read on the forum up to 07 the e90 had a very fussy floor module which meant that if there was any change in current/wattage in a bulb it would keep throwing up errors. If there the ones you want go for it but you may need to get the errors coded out afterwards. In the listing it also says "Professional installation recommended - Some wiring may be required for operation of Halo & LEDs (if equipped)" which would indicate to me that the halo rings arnt pre wired and you will properly need to get power from the sidelight for them.
