I am honored to be driving in the "DS" mode now, I was simply amazed, plus I got home 10 mins early..

It really bothers me how we have: a resonator, cats, secondary cats and a muffler...it kills so much of the performance man

Ever since I put in my AFE intake I pretty much only drive my car is DS mode. The engine noise after 3,000 RPM (with the intake) is awesome and the car has WAY more balls in DS. I switch back to D when I'm crusing down the highway. The effect on you gas milage is also slight.

Get yourself a cold air intake and a BMW preformance exhaust; your car will thank you for it.

Same problem with the delay here as well. I have an '07 328xi. I guess I'll be driving on DS on the highway until they get this resolved.

Also, DS completely solves the problem...I think the regular Drive setting is more for economical driving

I get that too. Just guessing here but the transmission wants to give you the smoothest ride possible. So when you wanna jump it the car kinda gets caught off guard and needs a second to figure things out.

If you're referring to having the transmission 're-learn' a more aggressive shift pattern by resetting it - that doesn't resolve the problem. We've already tried that. |

just try changing your air filter to K&N or some other brand (they DO NOT void warranty) and you'll see a difference.

-Tookout the carbon filter -Changed the airfilter to a "better-breathing" alternative -Spark plugs - Iridium are good, get a good brand - (this is a big one, It made a very noticeable difference to my throttle response) -Final piece of advice. It's out of some people's modding comfort zones on there cars. But if you think that our exhausts have four emissions and noise muffling devices in them (resonator, cats, secondary cats and a muffler)...you know where your losing your responsiveness and potential power. If you removed just one of the emissions devices (usually the resonator is the first choice or the secondary cat removal is probably the most effective and makes you car sound better aswell as increasing responsiveness and performance.). Let me know if you need more info guys...i'll help all i can. After doing all but one of those options I have damn nearly got rid of the lag altogether

KrysAlpineE92 - Thanks for the tips. Need to look into those.
However, while I agree with all of the little mods to make the cars a bit more responsive, I feel that there's a major issue in the software that controls the transmission. My wife and I both drive 328xis. Hers is auto, mine is manual. Of course in a manual you get to choose what the transmission should be doing, but the auto is pathetically bad when it is asked to do what the OP states. Highest gear, slowing down, then go to WOT. It takes many seconds for the car to downshift all the way and really get on it. In the time it takes the car to downshift and figure out it's best operating point, you should already be back up to 50-60 mph, not waiting for the transmission to noodle its way down to the 'right' gear... |

DS doesn't shift into 6th gear though....might as well just use it for accelerating.

yea as much as I like DS and the steptronic for quick maneuvers...I'd much prefer a manual. If you think about it, even the DS is still programmed to be miserly on gas. You and I know darn well BMW de-tuned the engine to quiet the EPA. The N-54 is capable of so much more (with a set of turbos, reprogram, three-stage manifold.....aka a 335 lol).
But I'd still be the first in line for a high-performance hybrid lol. Anyways, KrysAlpineE92, With the secondary cat removal how would one go about getting that done? Does it involve cutting or can it be removed and put back at any time?

Secondly, the secondary cat removal, could be done at your local muffler shop. What they would do is cut the cat up and fill the segment with welded and sealed pipe. It would still be legal with emissions regulations as far as I understand because a secondary catalyctic converter is completely uneccessary and it makes quite a big difference to the throttle response. The stock exhaust on all the N52's significantly reduces your performance and throttle response. It is also around 100 to 150 bucks depending on where you go because you dont need any parts besides the actual tube that they will have already at the muffler shop I'm not sure on the legal aspects of removing the resonator, but, it also makes a difference to the throttle response and I have yet to do this. Still contemplating. You can see videos on youtube of the effects of the exhaust note without the resonator.
