Suggestions for weekend around Wigan

I'm going for an Aston Martin track day (more like an hour) at the Three Sisters circuit in Wigan on Saturday 16th October. SWMBO is coming with me and wants to make a weekend of it. Is there anywhere interesting/nice in the surrounding area to go to for Saturday night and Sunday day time?

A great dogging spot just out of Standish near Haigh Hall. Go off Chorley Road (A5016) at the mini road-about onto Red Rock Lane. Drive up the hill a short distance. Before the canal bridge and pub, on the steepest part of the hill, there is a small secluded car-park. Watch out, it's easily missed. MAP

Thanks Will, 'er indoors would really love that - not!

I didn't mean Wigan exactly, Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales, say Wigan and a radius of 50 miles.

What sort of things could you do and see on a short trip to Manchester or Liverpool?

Kinda pales into insignificance in comparison with my older son. He was at the Botafogo vs Sao Paulo match last week (Botafogo is close to Rio de Janeiro) and is currently relaxing at Ilhe Grande, a resort Island some 60 miles south of Rio... before the more strenuous trip round the bottom half of South America prior to his departure in a couple of months to the Antipodes.

He sent a picture as proof:

I would book somewhere down by the docks in Liverpool, few drinks, find somewhere nice for dinner etc.

Next day, visit the Tate and maybe the Walker Gallery. Walk around Sefton Park if it's fine.

Howdy Al,

Wigan is truly shit. I work in Runcorn which is close - but equally crap.

How about you and the missus head over to Leeds so that Helen and I (etc) can take you guys out?

Me Too!!!

Wigan is chavvy generally but have the current league winning best Rugby league team, man of steel, coach of the year and young player of the year

Northern quarter in Manchester is good. Stay at the Hilton and do the cloud 23 bar overlooking the city is pretty nice.

Northern Quarter has several quite funky little bars and restuarants including Sweet Manderin chinese restaurant, Apotheca (nice cocktails) Walrus quite funky bar, Bem Brasil Bluu bar (nice food and drink) Further across town Chaoprya (Thai) there's also Deansgate Locks which is for pretty people and rather expensive. Alberts shed and Dukes 92 are quite nice bars near to the Hilton or there is also Teppanyaki which is good craic.

If it was me it would be Manchester as you might have probably guessed above!!!!

Alan, pop on the M6 down to Knutsford area (jct19) lots of parks etc. You could drive to the Joddrell bank obvservatory, which is a nice place to visit.

In manchester there is the WAR museum, shop and eat at the trafford centre.

Wigan is in general just an ordinary town. Heigh Hall park is really nice though, a drive through parbold is nice (its the rich area)

Give us a clue what you like doing and i know all the northwest very well so ill point you in the right direction.

Youll hate the sky bar at the Hilton. Its full of pretentious wannabees, the view is nice but the company is not.

Thanks for the comments folks. I really don't mind what I do as long as SWMBO enjoys herself enough to justify the journey up and down and waiting while I swan around in an Aston.

I'll delve into her psyche after Strictly is over and post some suggestions.
