330D - new back box to improve sound?

Afternoon

How much improvement in sound can you get from just a back box?

On the diesel I would say none pal. Fitted one to mine. Drove the car after cutting off the original and you wouldn't have known it wasn't there. Maybe remove the next box along and try your new back box and you will probably get a bit of noise.

Your best option is to get down to RSR in redhill and get full removal of mid and back box and just have a straight through. Been done here few times and on 6pot you get a very nice sound. With 4 cyl I would do similar but also add a bcs back box

Was kind of just thinking of a quick cheap mod and I guess doing the whole lot could turn into a bigger more expensive job.

Also, I was thinking about something which wouldn't effect performance and looks the same as the standard box to avoid the insurance making an issue of it etc.

RSR can do a full system for probably around £200 my mid section to back box was just over £100. And the tips can be made to look as stock as you want

Young guy over the road

Modded his Octavia exhaust as you propose. Did it sound louder? You bet

Did it sound better? Nope...it sounded like a Russian bus with a busted exhaust

For diesels, the best you can get is whisper quiet at idle and low revs (otherwise they sound like tractors) and something a little throaty, like a nice muscle V8 at around 4,000.

Modifying exhausts in diesels falls into the polishing turds category. Exhaust noise is NOT a diesel strength and typically produce very little that's worth listening to. Having said that, the LCI 330d and 335d both produce an acceptably 'tuned sports engine' note around 4000-5000 rpm but that goodness doesn't extend down the rev range so is best left muffled IMO.

One member on here has a 335 with straiht pipes sounds very nice. On mine I have no midsection and a BCS back box.

End result while noise was never the factor has changed. There is more base sound.

I have some sample vids just need to edit them when I get a chance. The biggest change I found was spool up. The engine is far more eager to rev now and towards the end doesnt feel as its being blocked. Most likely due to improved gas flow. Overall that and wich much nicer finish on the tail than the oem oval good result. The sound is just a side effect though kind a fun when you pushing hard.

Cool. Overall consensus seems to be to leave it.... which is what I think I'll do.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
