2006 Limited Slip Differential 3.64 gearing
UPDATED PRICE: $1,700 shipped! UNIT IS OFF OF CAR AND READY TO SHIP! Paid $3,000 for it from Performance Gearing earlier this year. Now it looks like the car will be traded in so I'm going to pull this off and put the OEM one on. $2,300 shipped. Will only fit a 2006 330i to my knowledge Broken in properly with a diff fluid change at 500 miles 3.64 gearing (up from 3.15 in 6MT OEM diff) My initial review can be found here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...890&highlight= I won't be pulling it off of the car until someone is committed to buying it so I don't have any pictures for you now. Current car is MT. I believe the AT come gears slightly higher, and to the best of my knowledge this LSD will fit them. It's really just plug and play. Takes a couple hours to swap out the entire diff.

Change the fluid once a year (unless you are racing it). Fluid costs $12 and you can do it yourself if you have jackstands. This unit has a drain plug on it which OEM does not, and while BMW considers the OEM diff as having "lifetime fluid," I'd change it out at 20-30k mi intervals to prolong life anyway.

Since that link of my review doesn't seem to be working, I'm copying it and pasting it here:
To recap, I purchased this LSD from Jim at Performance Gearing for my 2006 330i 6MT Sport. I went from the stock 3.15 final drive ratio to 3.64, an increase of 15% (for a shorter overall gear ratio). I was worried this would be too much for normal driving, but after spending 100 miles in the car tonight, I can't imagine having gone any lower (I would actually consider going higher if I didn't have to drive on the highway much). In my opinion, this is the way the car should have been geared from the factory. Driving Impression I was actually giggling the whole ride home. The unit is super smooth. At low speeds with the steering wheel locked full right or left, there is a little bit of tire chatter. I've read this is normal as the LSD breaks in, but even if it doesn't go away, it doesn't occur frequently enough and isn't severe enough for me to care. There is absolutely no noise as the unit engages and disengages. 1st gear is still usable, and 6th gear at 73 MPH spins the engine at 2,850 RPMS - about 350 more than before but is no louder and not obnoxiously fast. Performance I took some video tonight to compare 20-80 mph against the OEM differential, and found that I was 17% faster with the LSD/3.64 ratio (part of this has to do with the SSK I recently installed, making the 2-3 gear shift a lot quicker). I was happy to see I wasn't losing much, if any drivetrain efficiency with the limited slip compared to the open differential. I turned off all DTC/DSC just to make sure they didn't fight with the LSD, and the drive out of corners is just awesome. Under hard acceleration in 2nd/3rd gear I can detect just a slight hint of oversteer, but it is completely controllable with the throttle and the car just goes where you point it. I can't imagine how this car would do in the corners with an upgraded suspension. |

I'll be pulling this out of the car next week so it'll be all packaged and ready to ship for $2,200. If you have jackstands and a shop manual, install isn't that difficult.

Good news... the shop swapped out the diffs for next to nothing so I'll pass the savings on to the buyer. $2050 shipped. Here is a pic of the LSD off the car.
p.s. my car feels so lethargic now! |

Edit- reread orig post.
Very tempting offer, but I am worried that is a bit too much gear for the street for somebody like myself that drives 20,000 miles plus a year. Thanks and best luck! Last edited by StealYourFace; 05-15-2010 at 09:17 AM.. |

Now, if you are typically cruising at 80-85 mph, those extra 350 rpms may be noticeable, but at 75 mph the only difference I could tell of was where the tach pointed. With the 3.64 ratio you can pass on the highway in 6th gear without any trouble. |

Good stuff. What about city driving? I live in an urban area, is 1 gear extra short with that ratio? I used to have a WRX, that car had a very short 1st in it. Thanks |

The most fun is in the city actually. 1st is shorter, but definitely still usable. 2nd and 3rd gear are where I had the most fun though.
2nd is now short enough where if you are coming to a rolling stop, you can keep it in 2nd and not bog it down trying to start again. The first time you get on the gas in 2nd coming out of a corner and the rear pivots around perfectly you'll know you made the right choice haha. You do have to hit the dsc button once (or completely turn it off) to have the most fun of course. |
