Keeping on Top of a Black Car

Curious as to what you guys do to keep your black car clean. It seems like every time I walk into my garage its got dust on it.
I've been using Meguiars quick detailer and so far its been doing an exceptional job between washes. Any tricks or tips?

I use a California car duster to remove the dust and pollen untill it rains, then its needs a wash again.

I wash my car weekly, and then use meguiars quick wax. I find the wax better then the detailer. Black is a PITA to keep clean, However, my opinion is there is no other color that looks better than Jet Black.Unfortunately it's only clean for a short period of time. I use a microfiber car duster to remove dust, and now pollen.

I do a rinse down and then while still wet, spray with a quick detailer or ONR then dry. This helps lubricate the pollen to prevent scratching but also cleans off the car without doing a full wash.

My car is jet black and it's a huge PITA to keep clean and looking good. My last 330i ZHP was also jet black so luckily I've got a pretty good grip on how to keep it clean year round

This. Like the black UTOGs use. I've been thinking of getting one myself!

Meguiars Quick Detailer is a good in between as well for a quick, dirty fix (pun intended.)

You're doing it right.

The SG guys are laughing at us right now.

Then a little mothers spray detailer a couple wipes here and there until it rains. Start whole wash and wax process from scratch.

I have grown to hate black over the years. I owned about 10 black cars in a row and was always a stickler about keeping them clean. I picked up a silver e90 recently and all I can say is... I will never buy a black car again. My dirty car looks cleaner than most clean black cars. I now go sometimes 2 weeks between washes and my car always looks clean!

With black, your best off not doing too much in the way of wiping off dust as it will cause micro-marring and your paint will look like crap after a while. Perhaps ONR inbetween washes would be a better option?

Car dusters like mentioned above will cause swirls/scratches.

Even the QD with a microfiber will if you aren't getting it really wet and switching sides of the towel/using multiple towels.

I have found the best option is to use a coating, and do weekly washes. With a coating, dirt/dust, etc isn't going to stick as well. Waterless washes are good for the light dusting when the car isn't terribly dirty.

California duster is awful. Jet black here, I tried once over an area..never again. I used it on a previous black car but I had a black spray dye detailer to fill in the swirls.

Swirls will come but you can do a good job hiding them. I've used a soft wash mitt(sheep)with a nice foam gun wash and chemical guys detailer spray. There are swirls but you have to look for them. From 5-10ft away it looks pristine in the sun somehow.

Waterless washes will be worse than a duster. You NEED water (and lots of it) when cleaning a car, especially black. I've had a few of them. Silver , as mentioned above,, does look cleaner longer but you can spend 2-3 hrs washing and waxing and you can hardly tell.

You need a decent wax in your life with caranuba. It helps with the dust and makes it easier for you to wash. O have blackfire blackice Montana hybrid sealant wax for black cars, follow with a nice car wash shampoo like meguiars caranuba wax wash( the yellow one) to keep the durability of the wax. It has a great durability and helps with dusting and a lot of contaminents. A simple quick detailer won't do the job.

I heard the california car duster won't scratch your car, but will leave ugly swirl marks. Have you experience that?

Look up how a waterless wash is performed. Gary Dean method is very popular.

For everyone using quick detailers and waterless washes, don't just wipe it down after spraying it. Let the QD dwell on it for a bit. Use a fair amount to let it lift up the dust, pollen, etc. Even then don't do it on a car that has heavy amounts of dust and pollen.

What I do for my car (Jet Black also) if it's covered in pollen but recently washed and has a sealant/LSP, I'll take a hose (no gun on it) and let it flow all over the car.

The non-spray action of the flowing water just sheets over the car to rinse it off better. The sealant will let it just run right off (as opposed to a gun and you get beading all over the place) and no real need to dry if you're going to follow up with a QD.

Just accept the fact it will not stay perfect and will be dusty 5 minutes after you wash and dry it.

Honestly for the past few years I've just done weekly washes. My 15 year old car's paint looks pretty decent IMO for being as old as it is. My buddy just detailed it using a foam cannon...lets just say I'll be investing in one myself within the next year or so! You'll drive youself crazy trying to keep it perfect.

Black cars get dirty quick. Just wash it week/bi weekly.
