E90 LCI Xenon identification

Hi Chaps.

I am thinking of updating me LCI lights to LCI xenons. I have few questions though.
1- Are LCI xenons all bi-xenons?
2- How do you identify LCI xenon with AHL from xenons without AHL? Is there a small box which should be present at the bottom of the headlight?
3- what are the thress side markers for? (at the top of side signal)?
4- What are best H8 bulbs for xenon lights?

Thanks.

Yes, all LCI Xenons are bi Xenon. Not sure what AHL is but the lights with Adaptive lights have a patterned inner light for the cornering lights, the lights without Adaptive are just plain lens which may even be dummies. The orange LEDs on the corners are just marker lights.

Best H8 bulbs for the angels seem to be V3 LEDs but are expensive....

Thanks for the response. AHL = Adaptive Headlight.
Considering your response;

Is it this?

Are you referring to this type?

Any idea on what is the pin number on the headlight for this?
And do they turn on with the halo / DRL rings?

I could not find any watts rating on them?
I am double minded whether to go for those or the one which is being sold by crystal white 64W?

Thanks.

The top picture is non adaptive, the second picture is adaptive.

No idea on the PIN numbers for the markers, but mine come on when I unlock the car along with the angel rings. They aren't on when the angel run as DRL's but do come on when angels are used for parking/side lights and also with main headlights.

Adaptive units are the bottom ones. If you can get them working they are worth it make night driving much easier with the swing movement they have.

On my LCI model the rings are switched on permanently using the DRL option on the OBC menu screen, and stay on all the time just annoyingly dim when headlights come on (need this removing soon ).

As for the rings as you can can code out the dimming I would suggest the CREE 20W per bulbs kits. I have a set and they produce best results from all the other GP thunders and LED kits and tried a few

Got my set from HIDs direct but I believe a member on here has the newer more powerful set so worth going for them. Heat is the key with the LED markers I keep my ballast for them inside the unit no issues there but I think as you get up to 32W per bulb LEDs (64W) kits you might start to get issues. Saying that OEM H8 bulbs run at that so in theory should be fine.

Thanks Lads. Very helpful.
Already found the pin number. Looking to find further material on this topic.
AHL headlights require front and rear level sensors installed and seems like a hell lot of work.

I remember that at one point you were thinking of installing the H8 xenon kit. Any update on that project?

I am in touch with some vendors who are launching 40W bulb each in 1-2 weeks time. Not sure which one I should go;
1- H8 xenon kit
2- Lux V3
3- 64W from crystal white
4- 80W from some vendors.

I still have a set of spare H8 bulb xenon kit in the garage it since selling wifes old car so might try it. Want fit perfect but will give me an idea if buying new bulbs is worth it

First need to meet up with you to get the dimming coded out. Just finding the time is not easy.

Went down the route of the 20W LEDs mainly as to keep engine bay clean

Also from few reviews / pictures i came across wasn't over keen on the glare they produced which in turn lost the effect of the rings in the light.

Once I do get a chance to meet up with you to uncode the dimming I might try them out

At same time have been very pleased with the 2x 20W kit produces a good light during the day, short of full on sunny day it looks good.

MAk , go for the 64W sets , i have them in 20W each side and are super please with the result. i can only imagine being 12w brighter each side it will only be better!! To overcome flickering issue just turn on daytime running lights and welcome home lights + light setting on auto. you will never see any more flicking!

Thanks Magic and yoro.

I have bought headlights. Went for headlights without AHL, as fitting AHL properly is a big deal.

Now time starts to hunt H8s.

Don't all Xenons need load sensors front & rear for the self levelling???

Adaptives may need additional steering angle sensors (guessing now) and coding to adjust for speed etc.

You are correct Mike To pass an MOT leveling sensors and washer jets need to be fitted!

Fortunately my car already has washers, and ive just sourced the parts for leveling sensors for £60

with the adaptive headlights, can the bulb be changed as I have the yellow light this gives out when all the other lights are so bright and white as standard, even the angel eyes ?

if so, how hard is it to do and what bulb type / rating is it ? I remember changing the H8 angel eyes on my old 135i and that was a tad fiddly but possible to do with a little brute force.

I have a 335d LCI

Yes it specifically says in the MOT manual now about retro-fitted xenon headlamps to "Check for correct levelling operation" and "Check headlamp cleaning system".

Hopefully this will get some of the shitty HID conversions off the road. I'm not saying yours is shitty, makkan00, as you're using proper OEM assemblies but people who put re-based H7 HID bulbs is parobolic reflectors dazzling everyone should be shot.

Even with OEM light assemblies though, you might need a friendly MOT tester to overlook the lack of levelling / washers.

Looked at real oem and sensors shows that they are for adaptive function.
So I am not sure if the sensors are fitted on all the cars with xenon or only on those which have adaptive function.

How come you have the washers already fitted if yours had normal Halogen lights?

Have you looked into the wirings of the sensors to FRM?

Thanks mate for the tip.

I may go for a complete retrofit, if possible.
I may add the sensors and washer jets. Its a proper job, especially running the wires from the sensors to FRM, but not impossible.

Washers were standard on 330 and above even with just halogens.

All xenon equipped cars have the sensors for vertical aim on the O/S/F and O/S/R suspension arms - adaptive also have the steering angle sensor.

Unless you have a friendly tester I'd say you'd fail an MOT nowadays without washers as it's fairly obvious for the tester to see.

The level sensors are needed for the self adjustment on the beam while you drive and due to loads in the car to stop them pointing upwards So will be needed as well if you want the lights to work correctly

That's just the spring-loaded nozzle. The pump is at the reservoir.
