E92: got $800 to spend upgrading my stereo

$800 to spend upgrading the "premium" stereo, which is the door sail tweeter, not HK, system. How would you attack it on this budget? The system doesn't sound bad, but I could use more clarity and depth out of the door speakers, and more definitive bass. Sounds kind of loose right now. Highs are lacking depth, sounds kind of tinny.

FWIW, I consider myself somewhat of an audiophile at home. Obviously I can't get the same results in my car, but I want it to be decent. My home system consists mostly of modded amp/preamp (McCormack DNA 125 Rev. Gold and ALD-1 pre REV A), a modded Modwright Sony tube CD player (sounds incredible), Cardas wiring, and Tyler Acoustics D1 speakers, along with plenty of acoustic panels. I built the system up for $12k, but it usually beats $25k systems I hear on dealer floors (mostly because modded parts can out-run stock stuff at the same price level, especially when you look at McCormack and Modwright, 2 of the best out there). Anyways, that is where I am coming from sound-wise. My car is noisy with the performance exhaust, but I would like music to sound reasonably good.

Best budget mod for these:

1. New amp like the JL xd600
2. New door speakers mids/tweets, wide range here, MB Quart, RF, Jehnert, Morel etc
3. If budget allows, new 8" underseats
4. All easily put together with Technic wiring harness for new amp

Here are the speakers that Kai is referring to in the post below. Their install instructions are also interesting and correspond fairly well with what most self installers and tuners here have found.

That is probably about the best you can do for your budget and it should make a significant improvement from stock.

1k to more like 1.5k is more realistic.

1k to more like 1.5k is more realistic.
If you Diy this will get you into the low end of the audiophile range.
Be sure you have the Hi Fi system and not L7 that it what you indicated.
The naming of the the systems seems kind of fuzzy and the definitions
get thrown around a lot.
Hi Fi = Falls apart when you turn it up and tweeter gets harsh
perfect mudrange as one guy put it no or very little bass.

Before you do anything.

You can get some extremely good results in a car .
It may kind of fall apart with road noise though a little.
The audiophile solution Jehnerts for the floors Morels for the
doors.
Most used amp for the Hi Fi is the Jl 600/6

I also think it would be a good idea spend a little more and get better components, a better amp, and maybe a sub.

If you can budget a bit more - perhaps do your upgrades in stages - you will get much better audio. I'd check with Don (6spdcoupe) as he distributes some products that would be useful. You might consider doing the Jehnert loaded doorboards along with an amp and then adding a sub.

Great, thanks for the responses. I will contact Technic and see about obtaining a harness.

I can do it in stages if I need to: I wouldn't mind going speakers and amp first, maybe subs/mid-bass later.

Also, the system I have; is it Hi-fi? I don't think it is logic 7; pretty sure that is called "Harmon Kardon" for 2011 model year, and that isn't what I have. What I have is the in-door tweeter+midrange model: not the base w/o components. I read somewhere this is the "Hi-Fi" but the poster above alluded to the Logic 7. Just want to make sure I am barking up the right tree.

If you read the first few thread of BMW stereo types

If you read the first few thread of BMW stereo types
It should be pretty obvious .
There will be a solid plastic plate between the vents on top of the dash
instead of a dash speaker with a grating and you won't have a built in graphic equalizer if you have Hi Fi . Also you will have 10 or 8 speakers with Hi Fi and 13 or 11 with L7.
You could also look on a online Vin decoder and see what options are installed on your car.
Tweeters count as individual speakers in BMW spec manship.
All the standard systems are built by Harmon Becker of which
Harmon Kardon is a division I believe. The Hk was there best system in the previous model and L7 surround sound is surround sound process which Harmon Kardon markets.
