07 328i rough idle / ride need help

Hey guys,

Need some help here, got an 07 328i sedan, with 70k miles.

So this afternoon, got in the car after work, started it up, and the car started idling rough etc. Started to drive was kinda rough drive as well.

Took some video footage of a few things i noticed. I believe the car needs new spark plugs and or ignition coils. watch the videos below for a better description.

Thanks in advance guys for any help.

My 328i with 72k miles started misfiring under load today - also with a SES light. But as the ambient temp is only 20o, I'm going to wait until things warm up a bit before bringing it in.

You should probably change your plugs and coils! You're on the right track.

yes, check your codes....but sometimes the problems have to be significant enough or repeated enough for the computer to log them.

at 70,000 miles, it would not hurt to change the plugs and coils (coil prices have come down quite a bit) so you are probably due anyway along with other services you can do at the same time.

If it does not solve the problem, it could be emissions/egr/intake related. Check your egr system and other emission related hoses.

The calculated risk on doing the plugs, IMHO, is in your favor.

ps, codes are easy to check these days and places like NAPA or Advanced Auto will do it for free....as GOROMEO stated, check the codes first.

This. Had an issue on a 2011 328i with 42k miles on it. Misfire on cylinder 2 due to a bad coil. Warranty replaced all six plugs and coils. Sometimes coils last 100k and sometimes they just fail way early. Easiest way to test it is by reading the codes and then switching the coil to another cylinder to see if the misfire follows it. If it doesn't then the plug is bad.

Hey guys,

Got the SES light checked today, went to both auto zone and advance auto parts just in case. Got the following codes from both, P0050 and P0305.

P0050 is a heater control circuit HO2S and
P0305 is cylinder 5 misfire

I ordered 6 new spark plugs and ignition coils, might as well replace all 6 rather than just 1.

But I'm clueless to the other code any help guys?

Another question how will I be able to clear the codes after I replace the spark plugs and coils?

Any code reader will erase the codes as well.

The O2 heater code is either a blown fuse (not likely or bad O2 sensor.

BTW, I thought the gas mileage on my E92 sucked (21.7) until I saw yours j/j

I maintain that a bad spark plug/coil could trigger the O2 sensor. It happened to me, I never changed any sensor.

But would auto zone clear them for me? Because I don't have a code reader / obd 2 scanner.

So my main concern should be the cylinder misfires? Any suggestions on what I should do for that other code? The p0050

Not 100% sure about BMWs, but on most GM vehicles the PCM (computer) monitors current going to the O2 sensor heating element. If there is no current (open circuit) or too much current (short) it will trigger a heater fault.

Insufficient switching (the O2 doesn't oscillate between min/max mV frequently enough) could be a fueling or misfire issue.

Again, I'm not a BMW expert so anything could be possible with these electronic wonders

A generic code reader can clear the OBDII codes (which is what you're seeing) you need a BMW specific scanner to clear the BMW specific codes.

For the misfire, get someone with a BMW scanner (INPA is PC based) to scan so that you know which cylinder is misfiring. Then I'd move the coil (potentially plug too) from that cylinder to another one. If the misfire follows the coil/plug replace them. If the misfire stays put look at that specific cylinder, it could be a bad injector.

O2s are pretty cheap (labor may not be). Quickest route there is to check the fuse and if it's good just replace the O2.

Well I'm going to replace all ignition coils and spark plugs, Migjt as well replace all 6 then just 1.

I'm not just unsure on what to do with the p0050 code, anyone know the fuse location?

There is a fuse chart in the glove box behind the back panel that hides the fuse box.

When you have a misfire and drive, you are ejecting unburned fuel into you cats, which is bad. Maybe it will clear up after you change the plugs.

INPA is how a used to clear codes, but I use DIS now.

Hey guys just an update, so got the rough idling issue fixed replaced all 6 coils and spark plugs but in deed was only cylinder 5 spark plugs and cool that needed to be replaced but I did all instead.

Also guys Im not sure what the proper idle speed is but mine idles steady at 600 Rpms. Not sure if this is too high or what, any ideas guys?

Pretty normal idle. My 335i would be around 650 RPM's. As long as it's not bouncing around its good.

I have 95k stock coils with no issues yet. But I did change plugs at 80k and idle issues went away (note they weren't quite as bad as yours).

I'm trying to steer you in the right direction but I would check codes. If a coil or two is bad it would throw a code no doubt.
