You will still be limited by the sensitivity of the OEM under seats which I don't know what that is.
Think ive finally made my decision. I will use just the ms-8 power for the 7 channels and a separate amp for the 8th(sub).

Because I will be limited by the sensitivity of the OEM hifi woofers (which i think i will get 2nd hand as im adding a sub), are there advantages in getting the dls mid and centre speakers (97db per 2.83v) over the rainbow sl100 (93db per 2.83v) and keeping the vibe slick 4 (88db but i think its higher per 2.83 volts). I suspect the second option is a little closer to the OEM hifi woofer sensitivity but this is a guess.

I have tried to find their threads but i have had no luck.

My e90 has no ski hole and no folding rear seats. So would i definately have to go with IB? How much "trunk" space would this take up for a 12"? i suppose ill have to find a sub that will match my amp, and also can be IB'd? This is so complicated And i havent even decided what impedence to put on my dls I think running it at 4ohms is better for sql and 2ohms for spl

Thanks for the mention, was good to meet you the other day and I'm really glad you're pleased with the installation. I can see you're getting some good advice coming in on the setup! Looks like you've got the itch now though....

Just to add my view to the thread, I was genuinely surprised with the 'base systems' leap in sound quality and volume with just the MS8 and addition of the centre channel. Given the fact you say it's only gotten better with a bit of tweaking you must be pretty chuffed!

As a side note, just to reassure you, I do get an 'occasional' pop on mine on startup when listening to music. Not every time though and certainly not at any level which I'd worry about. The only time I notice it is when the stop/start function has actiated. I had thought it was my JBL amp but after reading this and a quick google search, it looks like it could be an MS8 characteristic instead!

Matt
Yep, was definately worth it to come to you to get it installed really happy with how it was all done.

Yep, i'd say its gotten a lot better with tweaking and advice from members on here, from when we first listened to it. Im really glad i went down this route. Im sure i will be tweaking it more though! Music sounds so much clearer. i have to admit the centre image was a bit weird at first, but the more i listen to it, the more im loving it

Not really worried anymore about the pop, guess we're going to have to live with it unless we recode

If you are getting a trunk sub, GET:

-OEM HiFi Woofer (2ohm) (doing some rough calculations, I think these are 90dB/2.83v/m)
OR
-Jehnert Underseats if you can afford them

Actually as I am writing...doing some comparisons between HiFi and L7, I am thinking that they are possibly equally efficient per volt. I have no way to test though.

If not getting a trunk sub, get SWS8 or 8xi depending on:
If you are going to power them
If you are going to power the rest of your front stage.

Ok that works...thats what I think you should do for now. and hold off on spending unless you know you want more...and where you want more.

Your system if it is powered only by MS-8 will be mostly limited by your least efficient speaker. No reason to get a super-efficient speaker that you have to turn down (or could substitute for a better sounding speaker).

I would basically try to make your system match up as much as possible in terms of sensitivity, using drivers you like and can afford.

Ok so i guess i will go for OEM hifi woofers (90db/2.83v) and this will limit all other drivers.

Is there a formula that you could provide me so that i can calculate sensitivity per 2.83v for different speakers? maybe a formula to calculate this from a sensitivity value at 1w/1m @ x Ohms? For example if i had a value for a certain speaker at 90db/1w/1m @ 4 ohms, how would i go about converting this to a sensitivity value at 2.83volts?

Also, assuming that the sensitivity of the oem hifi and the L7 woofers are equal, what are the differences between them? would one sound better quality-wise in my setup (ms-8 power)

I have also read that my 6.5" oem base woofers are glued to the enclosures. how would i go about replacing them with 8" hifi or L7 woofers? Would it be plug and play?

I would assume the L7 are better...the sensitivity thing was kind of a guess.

In my favorite quote from Ken "the base audio woofers require you to pry like its not your car." Quite appropriate.

ok guess i will have to think about that.

Question on the ms-8 settings. Whats the difference between adjusting the bass level and the sub level? they both seem to do the same thing...

The sub is a shelf fliter that boosts below 60hz by the gain amount. It also boosts between 60-160 hz as required to maintain the pre-selected crossover frequency between midbass and subbass. The boost happens on a channels that play thos frequencies for the same reason

This info is freely available on the diymobile audio thread

If youve searched there and cant find it it might be a good idea to create an account and ask andy. I dont have all the answers but the sub control question has been answered a bunch. Just about all i know about ms-8 came from here and diyma.

HELP PLS

I just installed my MS-8 moments ago......My system is a HK L7. Every thing is stock for the meantime. Anyway, my setup was done using technic harness with JL 6600 amp powering my fronts, under seats
and rears
.

Channel 1-2 -JBL MS-8 -Front -powered by JL 6600
Channel 3-4 -JBL MS-8 -Underseats Subs -powered by JL 6600
Channel 5-6 -JBL MS-8 -Rear Decks - powered by JL 6600
Channel 7-8 -JBL MS-8 -Side Rears- powered by MS-8
Center Channel is getting fed from the OEM Amp

I was going to call it a success after about 4 tries of calibration until I noticed a slight issue.

1. Static sound on the fronts, sounds like an FM radio without reception. Noticed this sound when the system wakes up from the Comfort Access and also before it goes to sleep.

2. A loud boom sound when turning the engine on / off.

Do you guys have experienced, heard or read somewhere concerning the issue.

Thanks in advance,
Marc

No problem. Don't mind thread jacking as this one is dead.

I just thought you'd get a better chance of help if you had your own thread with a specific title. That way the right people can help you.
