Not Just the 225's. I have an Alpina d3 and all 4 19" alloys on my car have now been replaced after 45k miles. Lease co paid for it so not for me to argue, but dealer told them the wheels were buckled and needed replacing. No RFTs on my car so it possibly suggests that the E90 is not conducive to having 19" wheels on it???

Hi new poster, long time lurker. Thought I'd share what I heard this afternoon with you guys. Just been in the local dealer today when another chap was given the "cracked alloys news", but was told this would be covered under warranty. Dont know if BMW have changed their stance on this?

First post on this forum. I discovered 2 cracks on the inside rim of the rear drivers side alloy wheel at the weekend. The cracks are laterally orientated, protruding from the outside in. Being fortunate enough to work within an industry where we deal with castings, moulds, steel structures etc a quick assessment makes us believe it's a casting/manufacturing issue, as an impact stress crack would normally happen radially (Around the circumference) BMW are taking the car in next Monday 19th to run some tests.

Does anyone have any advice on what to be aware of with BMW when they take the car in for tests and what tests BMW may plan to undertake?

Hi. I seem to be having the same problem with my BMW 325 M Sport Convertible. It is 17 months old and has 16000 miles on the clock. Have now been advised that the 2 rear rims are cracked and will have to be replaced.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I get BMW to take some responsiblility for this?

This is a long thread so if I'm stating the obvious or if this has already been stated then please accept my apologies.

I am just ordering a new BMW 3 Series M Sport and using the new September 2009 price list and sales brochure have noticed that the largest wheel option they offer is 18".

If they previously offered 19" it would be interesting to hear from BMW their explanation for withdrawing this option.

If it's a saloon, the largest wheel has always been 18"

I still don't understand why no-one has taken this to BBC watchdog. They voiced concerns of owners of Renault Scenic II owners the other week who had faulty electronic dashboards after 3 ish years of ownership - many has tried to get Renault to repair these FOC under warranty or goodwill and most had faced bills of £600-700+. A few had got them replaced FOC but there was no pattern to the success of owners who had got them done without charge.

The result was that Renault backed down and offered to do the work for a £100 nominal charge, and anyone that had paid a higher amount would receive a refund.

If enough members email and write to watchdog I am convinced that they would give this issue some airtime, and negative press from a consumer affairs program might give BMW the huge kick up the arse that they need to replace these wheels either FOC or for a nominal charge.

Just thought I would search for cracked alloys and surpised to find you all here! Could not believe my luck when I took my car to garage to fit new tyre (excessive wear on inside rears) to find out that I had a cracked rim and they would not replace tyre. Car 18 months old and quite simply am relieved to find I am not alone (i.e. not my bad driving - I don't think anyway) but disgusted that BMW has done nowt about this! Clearly problem pre-existed before I purchased my car.

my rear tyre had worn to failure on inside, so was obliged to drive 15miles at 50mph (not too bad I suppose) to country tyre replacement company. Did not have my size but managed to sell me a "skinny spare wheel/tyre". (I got the bad news about rim when I came back to the city)

PPS. I have never posted anything on any blog in my life (despite working in IT for 25 years). Rant over?!

I will certainly write to Watchdog (and refer them to this thread) if and when my 225s crack. It is digusting that BMW will not help out "loyal" customers with this issue when it's obviously a recognised issue, backed up by the fact that they no longer offer 19" wheels as an option and they did settle with crackerjack when he took them to court.

I can't believe their attitude - I shan't buy another BMW after buying five from new.

BMW are obviously gagging their representatives too. Darren Edwards comes across as a top bloke who understands customers' concerns in other areas has remained totally tight-lipped on this issue.

I think if all the owners on here who have been affected did actually write to Watchdog they's run with it.

Worth a try, I have just emailed them and the more the merrier, takes 5 mins and the more they receive the more appeal it has to have to the programme makers - a juicy consumer piece against a so called premium brand!

In total, given that the 19" wheel is only available on the coupe not the sallon 3 series, how many cases are BMW realistically looking at, its certainly not millions of cars surely....Also guess its not as big a problem elsewhere in europe as nowhere has roads as bad as ours either

Mine were rear wheels from a 330d msport salloon, 18", so it could be a lot, could be lots of owners driving around with cracked wheels, and be unaware.
