No. You're safe as long as you remove it before service.

There are a lot of unknowns as to what may be detectable. The dealership may not detect something, yet fasta data is transmitted to BMW which can show many things, even if you paired a non approved blue tooth cell phone, etc.

The SSTT is not detectable.

It is all computerized. From the time you hand your car to the service advisor, your mileage, service requirements, etc, are immediately transmitted on the web based key reader system. When your car is hooked up to the diagnostic computer, FASTA data is interrogated as needed by BMW, especially during PUMA cases, etc. They have models as to what are average values for a normal BMW. When something is out of range, their computers detect it rather easily. So depending what kind of $$$ failures we are talking about..will determine how much investigating they will do. It is a very difficult system to circumvent. It would be nice if you could just throw in new control units/DME etc. Problem is they have to be coded to your particular car. There are so many little roadblocks that can be thrown up, including new BMW software in the future which might be looking more closely at any particular values that they might choose.

Only the future will tell you for sure, when we start hearing of the warranty coverage denials. Other than that, modifying will somewhat always be at your own risk.

Who has EVER gotten "detected" for a tune? I never heard of it other than dealers claiming ECU was being tampered with after a turbo failure in one thread. Other than that i never heard anyone gotten detected of using a tune.
I used SSTT for about 2 weeks and went in for a fuel pump+software update and no problems at all. Now im running JB3 and went in for shimmy during high speed and had no problems again. Off course i took the tunes off before i went in for service.

Took out SSTT, went in for HPFP replacement and software update, no mention of tune at all. It was even the same SSTT as exidisjon's. Now i want JB3

Look...be a responsible modder. If you mod be prepared to have warranty issues. Take responsibility for your actions.
OK...off the soapbox now...the reality is that we have seen reports of BMW causing warranty trouble for people who modify their cars. On the other hand we have seen nothing here that shows that BMW was able to detect ANY tune. SSTT is fairly moderate and intercepts very few signals. Of all tunes it should, in theory, be safest. However there are no guarantees. See soapbox above.

However, the method is not fundamentally safer, IMO, due to fewer signals. At the limit where a tune that intercepts everything, the piggyback can keep the ECU in a virtual reality thinking the car is at idle and low-throttle all the time (not really, but you get the point). When you modify a small number of signals, you need the ECU to compensate with fuel adjustments etc, which are only undetectable to the extent BMW uses loose ranges and will compensate with necessary fuel, timing, etc (as those signals aren't intercepted). I think many of the tunes are undetectable now, but it is an arms race and only BMW's focus on next year's model keeps them from raising the stakes. They would also have to assess the usefulness of a log entry or determination such as "tune xyz was added 8/8/2008" and "tune xyz was removed 9/3/2008." If they don't see the physical tune, would just logged data be sufficient for their warranty decision purposes? If occasional radar detector findings are dismissed in criminal court standards, log messages could probably be found useless in civil situations. They would certainly ponder such things. |
