North Wales driving - any advice pls?
I'm keen on spending a week day driving around North Wales and was looking for advice of roads to experience and the extent of hidden police / speed cameras.
Searching this site didn't bring up much but I got the following from a search engine: http://www.drivingroads.co.uk/evo-triangle Anyone got any experience of the roads mentioned or other roads that are recommended? To what extent do the local police still hide horse boxes and the like? Any knowledge about the extent of speed camera coverage would be appreciated as would somewhere to stay? Thanks in advance |

North Wales used to be VERY hot on speeding but that was under their former Chief Constable, the notorious Richard Brunstrom, but he retired a few years back and I don't know what they're like now

Do a search for the 'Evo Triangle'

Done the evo triangle a few times (usually with a car full of mountain bikes or walking kit and 2/3 mates). I wouldn't drive past it now without doing it, not sure I'd necessarily drive there just to do it - although you could probably link up some other excellent roads if making a day of it.
On the whole the visibility is excellent and i've never personally seen any police on it (that said I have never passed more than about 3 cars while on the non A5 bits. It's a public road so you need to be sensible, and there are a couple of corners/dips with the potential to catch you out but it is a great road to "prove" your car on. It's obvious to see why evo use it to evaluate cars once you have driven it. Sure others will say there are better around but I have thoroughly enjoyed each lap i've done.. |

The A55 is a real hotspot for speeding with the Police.
Once your off it you just need to be careful when your coming off the national speed limit roads and into the small villages as they love to nick you coming into a 30 zone . Denbigh moors is a cracker of a road as are the roads around Ffestiniog. |

Just be careful. Others on here have mentioned the speed traps and suggested they may be better now Brunstrom has gone....
Well i'm afraid they are not. I pass at least one van a day, if not two. They are not limited to the A55, or indeed 30mph zones, they are anywhere, and everywhere where they can make a few bob. The roads mentioned are great, and i get to drive them every week (albeit in a bluemotion golf estate) they are worth doing, but be under no illusions that you may come home with a few points.

Cheers for responses so far, especially from people with 1st hand experience.
I never speed through towns or villages but do like to have fun on the national speed limit roads where safe to do so I'd be pretty annoyed to get pulled for say doing 70mph in a sixty where it is perfectly safe at that speed. As I'll be travelling 250 miles approx from Essex to get there; I'm trying to understand if it will be worth it? The plan would be to travel up, stay overnight, get up early following morning and then have a play. Would a weekday be better than a weekend for having a fun drive? |

Ahh I miss those days of sniffing out good roads for a bit of pedal-to-the-metal... Happy days in my Integra DC5 but somehow think it would be less fruity in my 330D saloon
