they have a very systematic approach to the rattle at BMW - just had mine fixed - before they will replace the waste gates or the entire turbo they have to replace the actuator arm. The actuator arm is not covered under the extended factory warranty (that applies to the waste gates or entire turbo in some cases). If the actuator arm replacement does not fix the rattle they will either replace the waste gates or the entire turbo (which is covered under the extended special case factory warranty).
Fortunately, I have an extended warranty which covered the actuator fix which was a 30 hr job apparently making it quite expensive job. I do not get why they don't just replace the waste gates while they have the turbos off the car...bc if the actuator arm doesn't fix the problem they have to go ahead and take the car apart again...another 30 man hr. job for some relatively inexpensive parts. |

Well if it took them 30 hours, BMW will not cover this cost to the dealer, they will have to eat extra work above the amount they contractually agree to pay. The dealer may be bumping up the number for some other reason, like accounting or we could get into lots of shady reason why they would want to show 30 hours on the books.

I'm thinking of taking my car in for this, but it is full bolt on. I've been getting the annoying p30ff code with my cobb everytime I pull in the higher RPMs. I checked all the vacuum lines and even replaced some, I changed both boost solenoids, so I"m assuming it's the wastegate. Everytime I run Procede, I run the wastegate value at 60% and that seems to lessen my rattle and I can run it with no p30ff code, but it seems laggy at times. I don't know if they would still approve warranty work for my car if I'm FBO. What should I do if they deny any warranty work?

I am getting 2 new turbo's today. My 4/50k ends tomorrow so I brought my car in to get checked. I could hear a raching sound from what I thought was the exhaust flap. My SA called and said it was the turbo's, never got any error codes.sweeet.

They never even bothered to pop the hood. Without a code, they are both useless. I'm now nervous because *I* drive my car every day and hear ticking on startup from cold. I have 12k miles for it to either get worse or take it to someone who will actually pop the hood, pull the vacuum lines, and listen for the ticking to go away. With my annual mileage, I basically have a year and in that time my CPO runs out. |

I'm one luck-ass motherf***er.
So my waste gates had been rattling since I got the car at 54k miles. Then Chapman BMW applied the "fix" by flashing the lag-inducing software update. So it quit rattling. Years went by and just this last weekend my car started acting like it had no turbo power when I floor it (and the low-power engine light would display). So I bring it in to Chapman and they find a vacuum leak in the engine through a smoke test. $200. I pay em, pick it back up, and floor it again on the next open road I hit and the same damn issue occurs. I bring it back and this time they decide it's the waste gate actuator arms are too loose so the turbos are not able to build boost. Now I didn't have any clue about this warranty extension. When I was told the turbos needed to be replaced I was freaking out (it was what I had been dreading). But then she tells me about the 82k miles warranty extension and that I have - get this - 81,700 miles on my car. She said I'm getting both the turbos replaced and it's completely covered. Man what a relief. After reading these forums I knew to tell her to reprogram my car to remove the lag behavior introduced from their previous update. She talked to her tech guy and told me they will. None of it cost me a dime. Got it back yesterday and she's like a brand new car. So now, obviously, I need to drive it Vegas. |

I brought my car to Portchester BMW and they said that they're going to inspect and replace the wastegates. My SA said that sometimes they won't need to replace the turbos and sometimes they do but they won't know until they remove them.
I thought the wastegate is part of the turbo and they'd have to replace the turbos to stop the rattles? My car is at 78K so it's cutting it close.. and I'm a bit nervous about the turbos.

I bought my car from a Nissan dealer but, I am bringing it into BMW Monday for the BMW N54 High pressure fuel pump recall. I get some wastegate rattle, should I mention it or is not worth it without a code?

I just got my turbos replaced at 78+K miles this week. I brought it in for the battery cable recall but I also printed out the service bulletin for the wastegate rattle and handed that to my service advisor. I day later he called and said i'm getting 2 new turbos!
for those that have had this done, what did your dealer receipt have on it for the part? did it say something about Turbo exhausts or something like that? I don't have mine in front of me but I recall it didn't specifically say "turbo chargers"... they only had it 2.5 days. I'm just paranoid. |

Took my car in for battery cable recall, and told SA about the rattling noise. He was resisting at first, but after two days he called back saying I'll be getting the new turbo under wastegate "Bulletin". They kept the car for a full week, gave me a 2013 335 loaner though. Rattling is gone and I have a fresh pair of snails!!! Just picked it up today!!!
