Broken Strut Bar Brace bolt

Long story short, I broke the strut bar mounting bolt that secures the brace that runs from the firewall to the chassis - the center E14 bolt in the picture. Sheared clean off just loosening it up with a ratchet

How big of a problem is it? I've had bad experiences using easyout bits and tapping out broken bolts, so if I can get away with leaving it off/replacing the OEM braces with a strut-to-strut aftermarket brace, I'd rather do that.

You can mount the M3 brace, it uses the 3 mounting screws from the top hats.

Anyone have the part number for this bolt? Cant seem to find it on realoem.

The bolt came out pretty easy with a screw extractor on a drill. Pro tip - 60 degrees only not 90 degrees when doing the final torque

Edit. Found it.

It just happened to me .... can i safely drive my car without this bolt for couple of days ? I would assume only the Bmw dealership sells these bolts. How much did u pay for it?

You should be fine for a couple days, may want to secure the bar if you get some vibration noise. Realoem shows it as a M10x16 should be able to get something that will work fine from the fastener bins at Ace Hardware for a buck.

The bolt is $1.53 per realoem at the dealer.

+1

m3/1m brace is much better design helps secure the strut tops much better and you don't even need that bolt at all, problem solved.

How did you get the broken bolt out? I torqued mine down to 28 ft/lbs, which was between the 25 and 30 ft/lbs I kept seeing as the recommended torque specs. The passenger side was fine, driver side snapped. This was one of the last bolts I tightened after replacing the eccentric shaft sensor.. unbelievable.

I have tighten the bolts on mine lot more than that. Many times. Probably 50/60lbs. I should still have mine bolts. I went with home made version of 1M brace. I can look for them if you want them.

Drill it out? Not that hard. Not sure where the M3 strut comments are coming from but that’s a $2-300 option, as opposed to a new bolt.

Its big enough to extract.

When in doubt, get an Irwin/Hansen extractor set, theyll include the correct drill bit too and actually tell you what sizes itll work on
