Not sure what happened, but my rear tires are shot. I ran these last summer and tire wear was nice and even. Switched to winter set up for winter. Took those off, had even wear also. Switched back to summer tires ran all summer, felt fine...until about a month ago. Started getting bad vibration. I just assumed that the tires were worn out (bmw noted that they were 'recommend/replace' when in for oil change), NOT damaged like this!
I'm guessing something has failed on the rear suspension. Bushing or something? Ideas?

It's more than likely an alignment issue. Tire ware on one side of the tire is almost always an alignment issue. Did you hit any potholes that you can remember? Have you recently let anyone else drive your vehicle that may have ? it would only be suspension if your application is lowered and possibly your camber kit broke. Either way your vehicle is probably pulling to a certain side while driving.. Hope this helps.

I'd check the alignment for sure, but... BMW sets up their alignment in such a way that the inside of the rear tires wears quicker than the outsider. So even if it is aligned "normally", it will still wear the inside of the rear tires faster than the outside.
That being said, there is quite a range in camber spec you can run in the rear. The closer to 0 within spec, the less inner wear you get, the farther from 0 the more you get. It is possible that the tire had been wearing slightly more on the inside the whole time, but it only became apparent as the tire has gotten close to the end of its life. How much tread depth do you have left on the outside/middle? |
