New owner 330d

Hi people, new to the forum.

Basically yesterday I bought a 330d saloon M-Sport auto, 78K thought AUC at derby.
I love the car its got alot of toys, i drive, sports leather, auto lights etc. How ever since getting the car the on board display displaying 30mpg since i reset it 100+ miles ago. My problem is I am struggling to keep the mpg at 30 with a steady right foot!

I have been in the hidden menu on 07.00 and have watched the coolant temp it sits around 77c while driving with heaters on low. I have seen it 80c briefly but no higher unless stationary at idle. I personally think it has a thermostat faulty! Can anyone advise what the temp should be? I have read through this forum it should be 90c

Now im not expecting a massive increase but i expected the 330d to be able to achieve 35-40mpg? am i being reasonable? will BMW look into the fault are they aware they can cause problems?

Thanks Daniel

That's low. From researching myself it should be hitting high 80's/90..

Warranty should sort it.

I need to check mine as mpg is a bit crap but don't know how to check?

I thought it was myself, i have moved to this car from a mk4 golf gt tdi 130 remapped and that managed 43mpg with my driving and 55-60mpg on a run! but obviously i have gone from 1.9 to a 3.0 auto so im not expecting the world!

I used youtube for my hidden menu as i could not work it out, i will find the link to the one i used it was well detailed

temps and mpg are a bit low and not necessarily related either.

My 335d gets about 32-34mpg on quite short journeys (less than 10 miles 1 way), if the mrs drives its about 28-30 as she is hideous at controlling flow.

When i worked further afield on A roads the thing would quite happily see 36 and even 40mpg in light traffic. On m-way in steady traffic it's 40mpg +

It really depends where and how you are a driving it, the low coolant temp might not be helping to the tune of about 2 mpg, your fuel may make a minor difference too (shell being best for me) and you might have other issues like dirty MAF, other maintenance etc. Have a look at other poor mpg posts, mainly from 320d's i think some people had work done which transformed the results but i cant remember what it was.

Thanks for your reply, it has just had a full service (air, fuel, engine oil + filter, front and rear pads) less than 250 miles ago. Well it has been stood at bmw for 2 months or more. It is also on shell v power diesel. But it's just used 1/4 of a tank so not been on it long!
I'm hoping bmw will change me the thermostat under warranty, if not i will do it myself. I will look into the 320d posts.

I felt exactly the same when I got my 330D, the things that have improved the mpg are:

Both Thermostats - made about a 3 to 4 mpg difference
New Turbo - made about another 3 to 4 mpg difference

This means that I now see north of 43mpg all the time rather than previous 36mpg.

Thermostats was the main things that made my fuel consumption better. Best £60 I spent.

Was your average 30mpg when doing short journeys or motorway? I struggle to get above 31mpg (displayed on the obc) when driving round town but shoots up when I hit motorways. Never seen above 36/37 though?

Is that 45-50mpg displayed on the obc or the bit under the rev counter bit? (Don't know what it called )

On the OBC mate, I usually just ignore the rev counter bit.

I usually reset the MPG just before I enter onto the motorway.

Christ I've only seen a max or 36-37 mpg when on motorway but that is without resetting the obc.

I'm doing just over a 500mile round trip to Manchester next Saturday so will reseat the OBC before entering the motorway and see what I get, what should I realistically look to be getting?

I will try and change the thermostats, and see what I get tank to tank Check. That way I can prove my computer mpg is accurate.

I managed 43mpg, while resetting the I drive journey counter on the motorway at 80mph! But the 30 I am seeing is through mixed driving!

I get 43mpg out of my manual 330d. That's off the obc which I found to be pretty accurate, I haven't reset it for hundreds of miles now. I do half motorway and half urban. It's about 14mpg up on my old mk5 golf gti with simular driving

Op Your car might just need a good hard blast if its been sat around for a while

It does appear to be getting slightly better, there is no faults in the engine. I might give it I blast tomorrow. It's on v power fuel which might help it slightly once I have used abit.

I am still quite sure it's the thermostat fault, also what doagnostic machine do I need to program things and read codes etc Eric can't seam to find a link or a website can somewhere suggest a website for it?

The Alpina is my wife's car and she runs errands in it all week ie taking the toddler to nursery, shopping etc (all town driving) , I've found that if I take it for an 'Italian tune up' once a week the engine seems to run better.
