question about hpfp sympthoms?

question about this, my car is having most of these symptoms at times and it is about to hit 120k..i know the pump has been replaced and when i took it to the dealership they told me i had to pay for the checkup out of pocket which runs around $150 i am almost certain it is either the pump or the injectors. I consider that kind of hefty to get the car checked for having symptoms of an internationally addressed recall so is that about correct? should i pay for the car to be checked for a recall?

As far as recall, you can either just call the dealership or look up the bulletin and affected VIN numbers. They never gave me a problem over the phone.

Can not comment on the checkup fee if it is still covered under the recall though.

they put my fob in at the dealership and said there were no outstanding recalls on my car but with it not being my first hpfp experience the symptoms seem to point to that, obviously it must have been affected because the pump has been replaced once..but with coming close to 120k i dont want to take my chances of not getting it checked before the recall time expires

BMW never called the HPFP recall a recall. They called it a voluntary service bulletin or some such name. Thus your car was reprogrammed so that the LPFP would come on sooner and not cavitate the HPFP. So in all likelihood your car never had HPFP failure just a new pump and software.

Bring the car to the dealer and tell them your HPFP is failing let them do whatever they need to do to verify that. If your pump is going bad you really think 150 bucks is a lot to pay for a repair that is going to cost you 1000 bucks out of warranty > 120K miles?

BMWs are not cheap to operate or own. 150 bucks is typical diagnostic cost and if you tell then it is failing and they do whatever and replace the pump you may not be paying anything since you gave them the correct diagnosis. I don't recall BMW charging for this diagnosis if correct. However if you are wrong you owe them that charge since you were wrong. All really up to the repore you have with the dealer...

You are at that magic mark. After 120k it is on you.

It was a voluntary emmissions and safety recall. After contacting the last and only owner thru email he said it failed on one of his 62mile trips to work.

$150 is not alot by any means i have own and modded 4 bmws in the past so iam pretty familiar with the car and its expenses but if a company recalls a part it would almost seem illogical that i would have to pay for a checkup to the part thats getting recalled?

I would never spent 1k on something like a fuel pump id rather get it myself and do it myself since ive gained my share of experience working on them..sp all i wanted to know is should i be paying diagnostic for a recall or is that just the stealership doing what they do best.

if you're not at 120k yet then I'd first be adamant if you're pretty certain that its an HPFP failure. Just say to the rep that you're talking to that you can pull the car up right now and show him how bad it is.
Heck, just record yourself in the BMW parking lot just before you enter starting the car.
If not, $150 is still cheaper than buying just the HPFP and replacing it yourself.

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B13 03 09 dated November 2009.
designates changes to this revision
SUBJECT
N54 Special Limited High-pressure Pump (HDP) Emissions Warranty of 10 Years/120,000 Miles
MODEL
MY 2007,2008, 2009 E60, E61 – 535i, 535xDrive with N54 engine
MY 2007, 2008, 2009 E90, E92, E93 – 335i, 335xDrive, 335Ci, 335CixDrive, 335Cic with N54 engine

MY 2009 E89 – Z4 sDrive 35i with N54 engine
MY 2009 E71 – X6 xDrive 35i with N54 engine
SITUATION
BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the High–pressure Fuel
Pump (HDP) of certain MY 2007, 2008, and 2009 BMW automobiles equipped with N54 engines. We estimate
that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a problem. Vehicles affected may have the
Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated with various low fuel pressure-related faults (e.g., 29DC, 29F1, 29F2 )
stored in the Engine Control Module (DME). Also, the affected vehicles may experience an extended engine
starting time ("long crank") or reduced engine performance ("engine failsafe mode") when the High-pressure
Fuel Pump malfunctions.
CORRECTION
In the event that the High-pressure Fuel Pump of an MY 2007, 2008 or 2009 3 Series vehicle (335i/xi
Sedan/Coupe/Convertible), MY 2007, 2008 or 2009 5 Series vehicle (535i/xi Sedan/Sports Wagon), MY 2008
or 2009 1 Series vehicle (135is Coupe/Convertible), MY 2009 Z4 sDrive 35i, or MY 2009 X6 xDrive 35i
equipped with the N54 engine exhibits the symptoms listed above, it should be replaced with the improved part
(P/N 13 51 7 592 881). For HDP diagnostic and replacement instructions, refer to SI B12 55 06 and RA 13 51
017, found in BMW TIS.
IMPORTANT:
Since Monday, October 19, 2009, a Part Replacement Authorization has been required (via submission of
a TC Case) for replacement of the N54 HDP Pump on E82, E88, E89, E60, E61 and E71 vehicles. For
details related to the "N54 Fuel System TC Action", refer to SI B13 08 09.
PARTS INFORMATION
Part Number Description Quantity
13 51 7 592 881 HDP High-pressure Fuel Pump 1
11 61 7 547 242 Profile manifold gasket kit 1
13 53 7 582 770 ASA bolt M8x17.5 1
EMISSIONS WARRANTY INFORMATION
Part Replacement Authorization must be obtained for E82, E88, E60 and E61 vehicle repairs
requiring replacement of the HDP pump, or other fuel system components affected by the "N54
Fuel System TC Action" listed in SI B13 08 09.
Any TC part replacement must be preapproved by the TeileClearing process if it is to be paid by BMW NA. TC
part replacement without prior approval will be subject to debit. Claims submitted without
prior approval will not be eligible for payment by BMW NA. When submitting a warranty claim for
the replaced part, the PuMA case number must be specified in the comment section.
As a commitment to our customers and to demonstrate our confidence in our product, BMW will extend
the emissions warranty of the High-pressure Fuel Pump (HDP) from 4 years or 50,000 miles to 10 years or
120,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The emissions warranty extension for this component applies to the above-listed models only, and is
transferable to any subsequent purchaser of these models.
This extended emissions warranty is applicable to vehicles registered in all 50 states.
Warranty coverage for all other parts is not affected.
BMW will inform all affected owners of the above-listed models of their extended High-pressure Fuel
Pump emissions warranty. A sample letter is attached.
The following Emissions Warranty Information should be used if the High-pressure Fuel Pump (HDP)
replacement becomes necessary, as outlined above:
Defect Code 13 51 90 12 00 Replace HDP pump. Includes: residual fuel
pressure drop test with mechanical gauge
installed, deleting any HDP fault codes &
