Audi A6 2.0 TDi S Line - which to get???
Folkss,
Buying a new car this week to replace the discovery as its costing a fortune to run: car 1 - audi a6 estate 2.0 tdi s line 08 plate 51k fully loaded with nav ipod connection + bose. silver/grey black leather + tinted - cost to change is £2k car 2 - audi a6 estate 2.0 tdi s line 09 plate 46k slightly facelifted model & newer engine so 170bhp instead of 140 and more frugal. White + black leather and tinted. Has nav, but not bose & ipod connection is just a 3.5mm jack (though wife has about 6 songs on her ipod anyway!) - £3.5k to change. Both from main dealers. White one they have only just brought in so still waiting to see pics of the car. Issue there is car is based up in macclesfield but dealer in maidstone will bring it down if we commit to buy, or we can go up and collect it - though if we do that im gonna ask them to knock off the £295 they get charged to collect it - so would be £3.2k to change. Not 100% sure which to go for. Thoughts?? Will do a deal today pretty much.

I can't be certain on the engines but I think the first may be the older BKD engine which was not without it's faults (although not exactly a dog when you think about how many cars across the VAG range have this engine). They changed to the CR engines around 08 but there was still a 140 and 170 version pre and post 2008 as they are different engines.
I had the BKD 140 unit in my A3, it was faultless and I thought it was very smooth with the DSG box. However, the German specialist indie that I use told me that they get LOADS of them in with turbo failure (fortunately not as costly a repair as with some other cars). Something that the 170 either pre or post CR version doesn't suffer. I would go for the 170 engine in something the size of the A6. I liked the 140 in my A3 but think it would be a tad weak for an A6. The newer common rail engines are just better and spec wise on the cars it looks like there is nothing in it really apart from Bose which I wouldn't care too much about. If the A3 and A4 are anything to go on then the Bose won't be much better than the standard setup. |

I had a 2008 '57 plate 2.0 tdi (140) S-Line multitronic for nearly 3 years, it was 5 months old and had 5k on the clock when I got it. At first I loved it (obviously) but then soon realised it was very uncomfortable, the seats are very hard and the option 19" wheels might as well have had solid tyres on as the ride was awful. On the motorway/dual carriageway the ride was ok. On A/B roads it tramlined badly across our patchy tarmac surfaced roads (I tried 3 different brands of tyre and no change) and the hard s-line suspension was just no good, banging and crashing over bumps etc. My 3 on msport suspension and rft's is a dream compared, I assure you.
I would also steer well clear of the multitronic (you haven't mentioned M/T or A/T). Mine went back to the dealers at least 4 times and had a 'software update' that rectified f**k all each time! It often used to rev too high when slowing down on, for example, a sliproad which mean't I had to brake harder to slow the car, it would then drop the revs as the box moved/changed and the braking force would not be required thus resulting in what was almost an emergency stop (I got used to it!) It was also not very good on fuel. At the time I was doing a 60 mile round trip every day for work which was 85-90% motorway (free flowing) and it never really averaged above 35mpg. Why did I have it for so long? HP! Took me 2 years and 9 months to pay half the loan and I handed it back, £16.5k gone with nothing to show and a hard lesson learnt. I'll never do it again! Having said that though, the interior was fantastic (excluding the hard seats), the nav was great with the large center screen and the little colour one between the clocks, the stereo was properly good (standard not bose) and was very loud, there was loads of room everywhere and the boot (saloon) would take 4 sets of golf clubs side by side, lengthways (the estate wont!). In my opinion take a long, long test drive. HTH Dave |

Pretty much said that - and guy said not much movement in it. Said the delivery costs come from a central pot - which is diff to what he said to me before!
I'll wait til tomorrow and see if he calls back - did say we were looking to buy over next few days so might spur him on - think £500 off will influence wife as well.

Well in 2 weeks or so time he'll probably be ripping your arm off at any deal as it's coming up to the end of the quarter. Hold out if you can.
Just as a plus to FRGs comments. The driving position in nearly every manual Audi I've driven has been terrible. The clutch is often directly centre of the steering so you sit twisted. Fortunately the DSG box (now called Stronic by Audi) is very good and very well suited to the diesel engines so absolutely no need to suffer. Don't confuse this with multitronic as it's truly crap as FRG points out. I never found my SLine suspension any worse than MSport on the e90 but I did swap it within a couple of months for some Eibach proline springs which were much better. |

I had a multitronic 140 A4 Avant for a year. 40 mpg average. Was expecting more to be honest. The 170 engine is considerably worse mind you, so if its actual fuel economy your looking for, get a BMW instead.
Also had the 177 A4 Quattro for 3 months before getting the 335d. It really was terrible on the fuel averaging only 37 mpg: I also had a BKD engines A3 140. (You wont get a BKD in an A4/6 because its mounted differently, only for A3's and mk5 golfs etc...), and it was pretty great really. 45-48 mpg average, post map (to around 180 BHP), driven quick most of the time. I had it lowered on H&R and it was okay, if a little crashy. But did have it for 3 years / 50k, and never really had too many problems with it. Great little car, and was the reason I gave Audi another chance with the 177 after the poor fuel economy of the 140 A4. Won't be making that mistake again though. That said, if you can live with circa 40 mpg average, they are nicer looking motors than the equivalent BMW and Merc, IMO. |

If fuel economy doesn't matter to you, they are very nice cars. If it does, get a BMW. |

This is the problem... i had a remapped E46 330d... and loved it and thought that was the perfect car for us ... but she has her mind set on the A6 - and liked it lots. So have relented as its her car and hey - less earache!!
MPG - well we get 24mpg from the disco - so 40mpg from the audi will be As an aside - we had the disco remapped via bluefin. Called them up to see how much a new remap will be as we have the device - and the answer was because we have had the unit less then a yr (bought last Dec) a new map for the Audi is free - i just need to pay postage of £7! Rather happy with that. (BTW - 330d touring was best car i ever owned - enjoyed it more then my E92 335d)

Thats a very decent move by Superchips, have heard of other Remappers charging considerably for a new map on an existing device. Service like that keeps customers happy for sure.
A4 Avant perhaps, they look pretty decent in the latest Black editions with 19" wheels. Being lighter it would mean the 140 or 170 engines would cope better. |

I drove a A6 2010 plate 2.0tdi. It just felt havey, lot of space inside. But when you're behind someone they will just move out the way lol. It was nice too drive for a 2.0tdi
Drove a5 sport back too which was crap. Then drove a a4 s line 2.0tdi 143bhp which was sweet. This was in 2010 when my cousin wanted a car and audi gave him 48 hours on them three cars. And I had little drive in them too. He got his brand new from Halesowen audi. He got a lot of discount as he had bought 3 Audi's off them in the pass new. I have just bought a 2010 S4 which on a 59plate. It's in the garage getting repaired, well am reapiring it Go for the 09 facelift model dude
