Battery replace

Back in February I replaced my battery, I keep reading things that suggest that replacing a battery requires going to a dealer to let them program the new one to the car.

Do I need to register the battery even after this long with not doing so?

I would...............registration tells the charging system to charge the battery properly, new battery = low charging, old battery= high charging.
Charging a new battery too much will shorten it`s life.

You do not need to "program" the battery unless you get a battery with different specs (cca) etc..
Registering the battery just resets the charging system to charge less vs charge more on a new battery.
If you have an old and weak battery, the charging system charges harder to keep the battery charged. Dropping a new battery in without registering it, the system will continue charging the new battery as if the old one was still in there. The worse that can really happen that I know of is, the new battery will not live out it's life to it's full potential from always being over charged

Also depends on the color of the battery your car came with. Some dont need to be registered... I belive WHITE dont need to and BLACKs do. Correct me If I am wrong...

Which reminds me I need to get one. It has been more than 6 yrs with original battery....

This is the fourth ACTIVE thread that's talking about battery registration right now, wtf? Here's a copy/paste of the post I've already put in the other 3:

"Registering" is the process of informing the computer that a new battery has been installed, and while failing to do that won't prevent the new battery from working, it IS good to do and CAN make a difference in how the car manages the new battery and how long the new battery lasts. Dealers will definitely overcharge on labor for registration, because if you have a coding cable and the right software the process takes all of 60 seconds. There are DIY threads on this forum showing how to do this.

As for what exactly registering a battery does, the link I added at the bottom of the post shows a description of the process. Registering basically allows the computer to pull the proper amount of current from the battery and manage it properly, which it might not do if it thinks it's still dealing with an old battery.

I had first-hand experience with what happens when you don't register a battery recently with my wife's car. Her Mini Cooper S's moonroof would only close completely while the engine was running; when only the ignition was on, it would come forward but wouldn't pull itself all the way down to make the seal, and it moved much more slowly overall. I suspected the battery wasn't providing enough power, so we got a new one. The indy shop didn't have access to the computer they normally used to register batteries that day, so I told them to give me the car with just the battery and I'd DIY it. I tested the moonroof with the new battery BEFORE registering, and the problem remained, which I suspected was because the computer didn't know it could now pull more current from the battery. Registered the new battery, problem solved immediately.

You're wrong. White vs black is non-AGM vs AGM batteries. BMW has a doc that I can't find right now outlining when each model started requiring battery registrations, but it's pretty much every car produced from 2006 onward.

According to my SA and Mike Miller of BMWCCA, registering the battery informs the IBS how to control the rate of charge. Obviously, undercharging will deplete the battery, but overcharging can damage some of the electrics. On my '07 E91 a bad IBS was calling for 17.5 volts, which ultimately resulted in a damaged JBE as well as a failed battery.

There seems to be a vague notion on the 06's

That they may not actually need or accept registration.
Pretty much everything after that does need registration

You are correct. It is not just a vague notion. In the 2006 E90s, the ECU programming is a different version (see the Bentley manual) than the models that follow. I have a 2006 325xi and tried repeatedly to register a new battery, without success even when using INPA. I did enough research to discover that only the early cars do not have to (nor can they) be registered. The newer cars do need to have the battery be registered for the reasons that have been given.

If anyone has evidence that this is not the case, I would like to hear from them.

Thanks.

I downloaded this software to read and clear BMW proprietary codes. It will also register (but not re-program) a battery
http://**************.com/products
I had to buy a $7 dollar cable from Amazon (think there is a link on the site). It works great.

On the 06 my Indy had trouble with the registration

On the 06 my Indy had trouble with the registration to .
So he monitored the voltage and said it was OK .
He was using an auto logic unit . So to me it makes sense you don't have to do this on and 06.
