Just noticed that my 128i does not have one, other 128i are missing one too.
Why? What effect does it have? Is it an upgrade to add one? Is it a climate thing? Its this part Part 11427525333 Under that front plastic on the right Here it is missing: Here it is visible bottom right: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/attac...1&d=1278849846

Yes, my N53 325i has one. It's a water/oil heat exchanger with passageways for both the oil and coolant systems. The water heats up the oil when it's cold and keeps the oil cool what it's hot! Not as effective as a air-cooled radiator type oil cooler I suspect, but better than nothing I guess...

it maybe built inside the engine now or relocated, since the oil filter housing needs to be different for it to be attached.

They did not come on the US 3 series cars. It basically acts as a transfer oil cooler. (Meaning heat transfers to the metal without airflow)
If you wanted to retrofit one you would need everything listed here and possibly more. http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...11&fg=30&hl=10 If you track a lot it may be a decent option, but you would get better results with an aftermarket oil cooler that lets airflow pass through.

Thanks Johnny
I figured as much after I saw e90pilot say that an n54 oil coolers and aftermarket versions wil fit if one swaps the oil filter housing
