Winter in Chicago

In the couple years i've ownded my car i have never driven it in the winter. This is the first time driving it. Just wondering how our cars hold up in the crazy Chicago snow. Mine is rwd and i bought some wintersport m3s for the winter. Anyone already running their winter tries on? Im kind of debating if i should already put them on. I seen many cars with them on and was wondering if its bad to keep them on this early.

Well, last night was the first time I have seen the snow indicator indicating temps below 38'. Personally, I think you may be a bit early as most of us wait until mid-Nov around here. Is it bad to put them on this early? No. The only thing is that the rubber on the winter tires will wear more quickly, particularly the warmer it is.

Old man knows his stuff. Over 45 degrees is rough on the winters. If you're still seeing 50-60s during the day try to hold off. You'll know when we all end up doing it, we're loudmouths.

My car showed me the snowflake for the first time this morning. Most people in Chicago I've talked to change to winters between mid Nov. and Thanksgiving. The only E90 experience in winter I have was a stock 330i zsp with blizzaks...the car was very planted and predictable in 4-5" snowfall

I've been running all season tires on my 335i since after the first month I got the car and I ditched the RFTs. This will be my second winter driving the car and I was thoroughly impressed by the car's ability to handle in the winter conditions.

My previous car was a VW Jetta (FWD) which I knew every single intricacy of and I knew what to expect. Two winters ago, I got it stuck twice and I I had to dig for hours to get the car out.

My E90 has performed significantly better than the VW even though it is a lot heavier, three times as powerful and RWD. I never got it stuck, nor have I ever been put in a scary situation by the car. Furthermore, I drove from Chicago to Denver and back through the biggest snow blizzard of the season. No problem whatsoever if you are careful and aware of the road conditions.

In your case, since you already have dedicated winter tires, you will not have any issues at all, for as long as you don't try to do any stunts. Those almost always end up bad.

I usually swap to my winter setup over thanksgiving weekend. RWD and dunlop wintersport 3D's have been fine for the past 3 winters. The only time I got stuck was driving through my unplowed alley with 6" of fresh snow and it was because I am really low.

I usually wait until the first actual snowfall. The traction control takes care of the first few dustings.

Instead of putting on winters, my gar goes into winter storage at first sight of a salt truck but I didn't have to do it until early December last year.
