Overheating transmission warning light followed by check engine soon.

Hi I need some help. Was driving on the highway yesterday, Got the red transmission light. followed by engine check soon. After restarting the car I was able to move it to the side of the road. To cool off, placing it in drive soon after gave me no power, followed by the red warning overheating light. I had the car towed to my home as it has no warranty.
In the past week I had been experiencing a slam (uneven gear shifts) and I felt I had a transmission leak somewhere. I have seen oil on my drive way, but since I had a spill in my engine I thought it was the engine oil. Not knowing bmw transmission fluid wasn't red in color. After feeling the slams I took it to an indy shop which told me it's the suspension. The same day after changing the suspension I got this error. Totally not the suspension.

So I need tips on what to do. car features 6speed steptronic. I was planning on changing out the transmission pan filter gasket and those o rings that I hear alot of people complain about leaking. I think I will need to order some tran fluid but need the PN if anyone knows please assist.

Also any ideas on places to check before I go about performing the repairs to ensure I am doing the right thing. Car has 94k miles.

TIA

Have you ever changed this car's transmission flud? If not, at 94K, i'd say your transmission is dying due to the fact that it was never serviced.

Thanks for the advice I am going to go ahead and order the kit shown here http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...d=187&parent=7. I think it comes with o-rings for the sleeve. I bought the car at 86k miles I do not know if has ever been serviced.

The sleeve they are talking about is called the mechatronic sealing sleeve, and its on that page at the bottom, but not included in the kit. Just FYI.

Thanks I wish noticed that before checking out hit myself in the head at the cost for more shipping. All in all I hope the tranny is okay

So I changed the transmission fluid/filter/pan yesterday. The sleeve had no oil around it and showed no sign of seepage. I think the gasket was old and the fluid was leaking from there. It took a little more fluid than what was drained.

Honestly I expected it to take more. I wasn't able to get a reading from my thermostat. I ran the car for about 8-10 min the fluid stop dripping I added fluid until it started running and tried to get in as much as possible.

Driving the 5 miles it switch between gears smoothly except for 2 times between 4th and 5th. I'm slightly concerned about that but since it I wasn't able to switch between 4th and 5th while when I was warming it up Ill observe it for a little longer. Yesterday was 56 degrees. The fluid coming out looked original (very dirty) the magnets where full with metal. I think this was the first time it has been changed.
The check engine soon came off immediately after the oil change. This was puzzling.

Should I be worried about the uneven shift up between 4th and 5th. It's not a large slam as the ones I felt both on gear up and down.

Thanks in advance
Thanks for all the DIY, saved me lots.

Where are all the members who proclaim "Lifetime" and "don't change it". The silence is deafening.

OP, hope everything turns out ok, but fluid changes normally don't fix problems; they prevent problems from happening.

Edit: The problems you are having might have occurred because of low fluid. Not your fault, there is no dipstick. Let's see if your problem goes away.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Good luck. I had to change my tranny fluid at 53k miles because my tranny sleeve failed. I bought the same kit from that website plus an extra quart and the sleeve. Change everything plus I took my car to a shop for the whole temp thing. All in all it took 7 quarts to fill my tranny fluid. So far my car shifts fine and no more leaks. BTW I have a 07 e92

You should read the silly debates these kids get into with me about "BMW approved, 15,000 mile" engine oil, recommended by BMWUSA's website!
