How would the warranty on the whole car be affected? And would they find out if the car is on a lifter?

Here's the review I wrote of the Quaife LSD, which I had installed in June 2007. Have done over 20k miles with the diff installed, never had a problem, never had an issue with fuel consumption, and never once had a problem at my BMW service centre (who know I have a diff, and love it!)

The warranty wouldn't be affected, unless there was a problem caused by the new diff, which is extremely unlikely as there is nothing the diff can do to break other parts of the car. And there is no way of telling visually that there is an aftermarket differential installed, as it uses the OEM BMW differential housing.

Thanks for the info. Called Mr. Bird and it does look like I will have the LSD fitted late Nov. OT Also thanks for the info on the Hartge Sway Bars. I'm having a look at them as well.

why did this thread have to pop up, i see my orange light flash more then I'd like. now I need one.. well maybe after Xmas.

But looking at the Birds Site, and Quaife.co.uk they don't seem to stock one for the 335d. I see CD had one fitted to his car, so was wondering does anyone now if they are still available for the D?

And anymore info on the weild issue, how does this look when finished? is it still hidden in BMW OEM parts?

Excellent write up, take it you had the work done at Birds ?

You are right about a remapped car needing one, I have JB3 1.1 and BMS intake fitted ( circa 400bhp on V Power ) and the car tries to break traction in 3rd and fourth 60 -80mph if the road is not bone dry. Also there is way too much thrust available for the electronics to cope with from a standing start.

A Quaife will be on my shopping list for next yr I think.

I also have a few different options for the car. Varying from my street clutch limited slips, Quaife, and my full race carrier that was designed and built for the Bimmerworld WCTC e90s

For what the diff does, £1200 for a LCD diff is a very good investment.

I really wish I had this! I think it's more important than down pipes, higher boost (than I already have), catback exhaust, an intake or intercooler. Stock power is fine for the stock open diff, but any more power and the DSC intervenes too much and the rear brakes get worn WAY too prematurely. I had my rear brakes replaced at only 10k miles because of the rear brakes trying to keep that power under control. I know an LSD like this would put the power down much more efficiently/effectively and I wouldn't have to have power robbing braking or DSC intervene so much. I just have to think about the $5k (approximately) to buy this and have it installed. That's a big chunk of money, but could be worth it over a period of time... and I plan to keep my 335i for several years.

It is a lot of money, but the improvement in driveability, in handling, surefootedness and controllability at the limit more than justifies the cost. I guarantee you that once you have it installed, you'll never go back to the original setup

Audi Quattro Torsen Diff

Geared, torque-sensitive mechanical limited slip differentials utilize worm gears to "sense" torque on one shaft. The most famous versions are:

* Torsen differential invented by Vernon Gleasman in 1958, then sold to Gleason Corporation, who started marketing it in 1982;
* Quaife differential, sold under the name Automatic Torque Biasing Differential (ATB), covered by European Patent No. 130806A2.
* Eaton Corporation differential, sold under the name Eaton Detroit Truetrac.

Geared LSDs are less prone to wear than the clutch type, but both output shafts have to be loaded to keep the proper torque distribution characteristics. Once an output shaft becomes free (e.g., one driven wheel lifts off the ground; or a summer tire comes over ice while another is on dry tarmac when the car goes uphill), no torque is transmitted to the second shaft and the torque-sensitive differential behaves like an open differential.

Geared LSDs are dependent on the torque and not on the speed difference between the output shafts. Such differentials may not be adequate on extremely slippery surfaces such as ice (or thin air, when a drive wheel loses ground contact altogether).[3]

Geared LSDs may be used:

* to reduce torque steer in front-wheel drive vehicles;
* as a center differential in four-wheel drive (e.g., on the Audi Quattro);
* in rear-wheel drive vehicles, to maximize traction and make oversteer easier to manage (as in drifting). Although, for extreme drifting, a geared LSD is less effective compared to a clutch type LSD.


i found this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_slip_differential but i don't understand the bolded part....could anyone explain why this would happen to Quaife LSD if this is what most people say about it:

the QUAIFE Differential powers both drive wheels under nearly all conditions, instead of just one.

With an ordinary open differential, standard on most cars, a lot of precious power is wasted during wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip, along the path of least resistance.

The QUAIFE, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has better grip, and biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel. In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the QUAIFE biases greater power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed
