High-pitched whine - comfort access?
My girlfriend just got an 07 328xi with comfort access (loves it.) However, after she parks it, I can hear a super high-pitched electronic whine coming from somewhere on/in the car. I hear it more outside the car than if I get in. Once the car is started, I can't hear it anymore. After about a minute, the noise stops. Opening a door restarts it.
My 06 330 (no comfort access) doesn't do this at all. Anyone else notice this? BTW she can't hear the sound - her ears aren't as good. I fear that if she took it to the dealer, they'd never hear it either.

I hear that noise too, I think it has to do with the power going to everything. It shuts off when everything in the car is without power. Like when I sit in the car with the door open in my garage (engine off) and turn the radio on, the noise comes on. When I shut it off, it goes away after a bit.
ps i dont have CA |

i also get that noise. for me it happens not only on shutdown, but also when i open the car, for example, to grab something out of it. i think it stems from the car drawing power when the engine is off. but it seems the sound is common to all e9x's.

With CA, when you open the door and bring the key inside, it assumes you're going to start the car, so it goes through a kind of startup routine. Nav CD starts spinning up, steering wheel unlocks, various other electrical things start whirring or whining. If you don't start the car, but leave the key in it with the doors closed, everything shuts back down after a while. Opening a door will start things up again.
I know this because I always wash the car with the key inside.

Normal, eh
Thanks for the replies. It sounds like it's normal. Maybe it's something they added during the 9/05 refresh or for 07, so my pre-09/05 330 doesn't do it.
It made me nervous because I work with electronics and they often make a noise just like this when they're beginning to fail.

Yup totally normal but the Nav CD spinning started to get on my nerves BIG time! I wish the Nav CD was located in the trunk like some other cars!!!!

I couldn't have agreed more! Copy Honda: Have a in-dash 6 disc CD Changer and the Nav DVD in the trunk! Com'on, how often (if ever) will someone change their Nav DVD?

I guess they think we'll be using the DVD for our massive mp3 collections and thus must have easy access

I am hearing this high pitched whine coming from the loaner 07 328xiT I've been driving all week. Its really loud as soon as I open up the tailgate, with no key in the dash. Also, sometimes the whine comes through AM radio stations while driving. The car does not have CA or NAV. Oct 06 build date. Drives me insane.
This is not normal, sounds to me like a bad ground somewere in the electrical system. My car is a Jul 07 build and it never did this.

I have CA in a 335i E93. After the car is off, if I go back and open the trunk, there is definitely a whirring sound in the trunk after the trunk is opened. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers-side taillight. Almost like it has something to do with the electronic latch on the trunk or something. It stops after a few seconds.

i always thought the high pitched twine was the power to the oil cooler.

It's normal, at least for CA cars. They all do it. There are a lot of things that power up when you open the door, shut off the car, etc. Coolant pumps through the turbos depending on their temp after shutdown, comfort access powers up some of the convenience features...
Don't worry about it. Now if your car takes longer than a second to start, i.e., long crank, then start to worry...
