What are the cons to getting a DP before a tune?

As title states, are there any cons?

you get better gains from the tune...the car may not run right on just a catless DP (catted may be fine though) w/o a tune...you will likely throw a check engine light if you go catless and no tune or DP 02 fix.

You won't get the full potential of the DP's unless you are tuned. For best bang for the buck HP increase, tune and meth should be your first 2 mods.....DP's should be 3rd (unless you go FMIC for hot weather/auto x).

They will still give you a decent bump in HP and the sound will be much deeper, but 99.9% of people will tell you tune first.

The only real con to it is the warning light on your dashboard

I second the "car might not run properly" view. Given turbos are spun by pressure differences before and after the turbine, and removing the cats and changing the diameter of the down pipe will change how the turbos respond, I would be very hesitant to run the car with a DP and no tune.

Better by far to buy the parts, keep them in the garage, and get them installed when you can get the car tuned properly.

Not really sure why you would want to, But as everyone has said, If you go catless you will need the O2 sensor fix.

Well, the main reason I was asking is because I'm going more for sound rather than performance. I wont have the funds to upgrade my exhaust until August (saving up for the Akra stainless steel ver.). I thought buying the DP first will hold my hunger over for the sound I'm craving.

But I suppose it's not worth the hassle if the warning light is on without the tune. I'm one of those paranoid people who flinches at the sight of anything going wrong with something. Usually with things I have little to none experience on. In this case, BMW and modifying cars in general.

Would the general consensus be tune > exhaust > DP > FMIC > meth > everything else?

And if you are one of the super sketchy types then I don't think meth would be a mod for you. Stick with the "passive" mods, intake, downpipe, exhaust, FMIC.

tune -> fmic -> downpipes -> meth -> exhaust or something like that. It depends on your personal needs. You can add parts like exhaust whenever you want as it really only adds sound

Not sure how much dp's cost for the 335 but I'm pretty sure it's around the same as the tunes available w/ install. So you install dp's first all u have is a light on the dash and more noise.. Tune first, instant powah..

None actually pros..lower duty cycles on the turbos b/c the restriction of cats is gone which means they work less to reach the same boost..

u will throw O2 codes so u need a DP fix

Thanks everyone for the insightful responses. I decided to go the tune route and just purchased a N55 JB3 with the CAN tool from someone on the forums. Going to install it this weekend. Hopefully I don't run into any problems.

My next performance mod will be the exhaust, no doubt, in August. Then the DP's. I'll figure it out if I need more power from there.

I wouldn't waste money on DPs without a tune.
