Best Map for longevity/performance.

i recently installed the JB3 on my car and was wondering what would be the best map for everyday performance. I own the car so i was wondering what would be best for longevity as well. I purchased the car in july 07'. the only modifications on the car are JB3 1.4 and a K&N drop in filter. thanks!

P.S. is it regular for the n54 motor to make a ticking sound when it is idleing? it's very audible but not overly loud.

Ditto. Tunes WILL reduced the longevity/reliability of the car. If you were to pick, I would go with Map 3 for everyday driving with at good mix of performance. 5+ has the chance of throwing hidden tuner codes. You pay to play so use your own discretion.

I'm in the same situation as the OP; I own the car and have my tune on the way.

I am also concerned about longevity and reliability, so approximately how much will a tune affect the car? (if this can even be answered)
Should I expect the car/engine to fail before 100k running on Map 3?

To the OP, I plan on running Map 3 as my daily map. I'm not too worried about longevity, but it is a concern.

Yes the lagfix maps work with pre-29.2 cars but the effects aren't as obvious. The lag issue has been resolved by the latest BMW software so it is not as big of an issue as it was a year ago.

Map 2/3 are great day to day maps on a stock car if you don't "need" the fastest possible map

I fyou own the car and care about longevity, you should do a conservative Dinan Tune or JB+/SSTT tune.

well running the map is only one part of the longevity issue. the other is how hard you drive the car. If you only get into every once in awhile, it wont be as bad as if you are going WOT on every straight road you come across. Doing that to any car regardless of a tune will decrease the longevity. The tune being on their is going to automatically kill the longevity of the motor. It is all how you use it

It also luck of the draw. Some people have cars that they mod and never break, and others have it happen more than once.

I had a 91 5.0 that I built and had nothing but issues with, and I did not drive the car hard all the time. My friends 5.0 made more power and he raced the thing darn near every weekend on slicks and never had any major failures. he even had a blower blow up and the engine swallowed all that aluminum and steel from the the blower blades and he still had that engine last 150k miles. Go figure. Mine blew up after 50k and I had many other issues with transmissions and rear ends.

This is always the usual question people have. In my eyes, if you are concerned about longevity, keep it stock. Doesn't matter which tune you go with, you are increasing wear and tear. It may be a very minor increase, but dont be fooled! You are increasing it!

Having said that, how much is anybody's guess. For JB3, the lower maps may not put a lot of strain. How much the life will be shortened, is again, anybody's guess. Factors like how you drive it, the weather, maintanence etc all play factors as well.

I own my car, it's 01.07 built, MSD80/25.0 still JB3 on 95oct. and stock otherwise. My breakdown of map usage is like this:

MAP3 = Long cruise or extreme heat with AC.
MAP5 = Everyday.
MAP7 = Cooler ambient weekend map.

This brakedown works fine on my otherwise stock car and 93oct. and up. My car has been JB tuned for almost 2 years without single dealer issue and believe it or not 1 single CEL during a beta test. My only other mod will be CM meth kit.

P.S If you want longevity, stay stock!

Map 2/3(w/lagifix) are fine maps to use...
If you want to push it go to Map 4/5 and or track days/races 6/7

Mike, new 2009 335i owner here, and I'm curious about the "turbo lag" issue. I've had a number of turbo cars previously, including a 300ZX TT, and honestly, my 335i Coupe doesn't seem to have the "hit" or "push in the back" my 300ZX had. My car has the Steptronic and Sport Pkg, and seems slow to spool up. Problem is, I don't have any other cars for point of reference/comparison.

Are the '09's still subject to the turbo lag issue? If so, could you possibly point me to the TSB for that issue? I'd love to walk into my dealer with it to get the necessary software update. Would you happen to know which version cures the lag issue?

Many thanks.
