I noticed a howl/noise from my turbos after having AR design Hi-flo Cats installed but have to say its no where near like the noise in first post, also running JB4 and Forge intercooler. No smoke or reduced performance (quite the opposite infact )

Hard to hear. Are you referencing the whine or the whistle?

I starting hearing this noise after changing the filter. When using the stock filter I get no noise.

In my case, lets just say my mechanic found concrete evidence of an install error. Should my tune override their negligence? |

This sound is not exhibited on turbos that haven't been abused. This sound comes from over spinning the turbos and driving too much PWM through them. That is the cause. That isn't to say there aren't a couple defective units out there, there is no way to know really, but 99% of the time this is caused by overboost. |

Really? How do you know that? Are you an expert on these turbos? On what empirical evidence are you basing these conclusions on?** ** Not that I purport to be. But at I least know what I don't have the actual knowledge to claim I know. |

Saying that overboosting is the only possible cause because the only n54 turbos that **you** have heard of making noise were tuned, is as logical as saying that the only people who die from a heart attack under age 50 must be overweight and smoke cigarettes, because everyone **you** ever knew who died of a heart attack under age 50 was fat and smoked. My car literally just hit 20,000 miles last night, it's a 2008. I drive this car like a grandma for the most part, and I only had a JB4 on it for 1,000 miles. I am stock now, and this sound is more than prevalent. Never boosted more than map 1's 13psi
If the cause is truely from overboosting, that's pretty crazy that a car with this low of milage, running only a psi more boost than Dinan is having this issue |

I am telling you what it is based on my understanding of turbochargers and my experiences with turbocharged cars. New turbos with this sound is install error or incorrect remans. Overspeed wears the bearings out and this is the result. You don't have to believe me, but that is what it is. For people who are all stock with this sound, are you the original owner? How many miles?
This isn't a new problem, these aren't new turbos (this family of turbos has been used in different forms for ~20 years), doing a minimum amount of research will get you to the same conclusion. Or just ask Tony what he thinks causes the problem and he will tell you the same thing. |

To be honest I don't know. Either way it is a failure of the bearing/slop that causes the sound. I would defer to Tony though considering his company has been in the turbo business for almost 40 years.
