Radio Alert
hey everyone, I have a 06 330i no i drive, while i was sitting in my car last night i was listening to a cd and the cd player switched to the radio by itself. On the radio it said alert. I switched back to the cd and it started playing again for about another minute, then it did the same thing and it kept doing it. This morning i drove from work and it didn't do it until i was almost home about 20 minutes into the ride. It is a stock Radio system. Any ideas what this could be??

So i called the dealer and they said that there are other people having the same problem, and that BMW of America is working on it. Is any one else experiencing these problems?

Hmmm.....I live right next to a Naval Air Station, they fly jets ALL the time. I had thought of this before as well. Maybe it is something that cops transmit or planes transmit that makes the radio (or RDS stuff on the tuner) change to the tuner. On a side note, when it switches to the tuner, does it always change it to the same FM station? Mine changes to some rap station that isn't even on any of my presets. Go figure...

Same here
I've had my 335 since december and it started doing the same thing for the first time yesterday. I thought it may have been something to do with the disk but i put it back to cd and it plays right away. I have no clue what it could be. It seems to come on completly random. Does any one have a clue whats going on?

I'm driving my car today for a little while I'll see if its when there are any jets or cops near by. Also, I live in VA too, and so doesn't everyone else that is having the problem. Mine switches to a Rap station ill see what the station is and post something when i get back.

Ok so I drove past 3 cops and drove behind a cop for like 15 minutes and nothing happened. I was driving around VA Beach area. Once i started heading towards the naval base on I64 it started to happen again. I was also sitting at a wawa and it happened too. The station that it turns to is 96.7. I went up to Newport news near the airport and a few planes flew over me and nothing. I switched the radio to 96.7 and the station didn't come in and it didn't switch to it until i came back down towards the Naval base. Hope this helps.

Hi All,
I think you guys have the "TP" function turned on, on your radio. Its the 2nd to last button on my 135i. When the TP is on the CD or AUX or USB will be interuted for THAT news event, then what ever you were listening too will resume. The "TP" button is the 2nd to last nutton next to the U-turn or back button on teh radio HU. |

You can also acess the "hiden" radio menu.
You turn the radio off, then on... then imediately press and HOLD the "M" button(for like ten secs)... this will get you into the hidden menu. You can turn off the TP this way too. Just scroll thru the menu screens - using the arrow keys. |

I just went to check and when i scroll through it comes to the "TP" setting.
Its shows: TP-V 0 -V +V I went through and made it +9 which made it seem like the radio got louder in the front of the car. Then when I made it -9 I couldn't hear the radio at all. |

Do ANY of you guys having this problem have iDrive? Or is it 100% Professional HU? (The sound system is completely independant form the HU - either HU can have Logic 7 or HIFi ir base audio)
Is anyone NOT in VA having this problem? |

I can explain what is happening - just not why it is happening with US radios.
German radio has a function (that works with RDS) that allows you to listen to a CD/Aux/nothing but switches to your local radio station when they broadcast traffic or weather emergency information. This function is activated by transmitting a particular frequency to your radio that tells it to switch functions or channels. At the end of the message the station will transmit another frequency that resets to the original channel or function. The volume function is that you can set it louder (or quieter) than your normal level to get your attention. I didn't think that our radios had that functionality but: A: it appears that they do and; B: jets activate it. Try turning RDS off to see if the issue disappears. This wouldn't be a fix but it might narrow down the problem for BMW. BMWNA probably hasn't connected the problem to the Verkehrsfunk or Verkehrsdienst that used Autofahrer-Rundfunk-Information to activate. ARI was developed by Blaupunkt in the early seventies and was beta tested in NY in the early to mid 80's but ran into FCC issues as the carrier tone was similar to that used by the Emergency Broadcast System (now the Emergency Alert System) The base carrier signal was 57 kHz and was augmented by regional frequencies between 23,75 Hz and 53,977 Hz. The bottom line is that your radio is thinking that it is getting a traffic or emergency broadcast. The system now uses RDS but even ARI was rock solid in Europe with very few mis-cues, but it never worked in the US because of the FCC issues and, IIRC, overhead electric lines. |

I just tried this in my 2007 E90 (manufactured in 10/2006) and it works! I changed the region from US to Europe.
Two questions after I scrolled through the hidden menu: 1) There is a sub-menu that allows you to select 1) LINE, 2) RDS, or 3) OS. What does that mean? It was set at LINE and I changed it to RDS but I didn't notice a difference. Anyone knows? 2) When I turn on the radio, the screen briefly shows "Region off". What does that mean? Thanks guys! |
