have i made the right decision?
hi
this is my first post and i am going to be a brand new bmw owner and can't wait to be part of this community!! i have just ordered a 318d MSport. now my question is (after reading several posts) is the 318d a decent drive? due to company tax restrictions, my choice was limited. the dealer assured me that the 318d was a good car even though it is the slowest car in range. after my test drive, i was pleased, much better than my current car, a vauxhall astra 1.6. it doesn't feel espcially quick, but i was hoping that chipping the ecu would make it equal or better than the 320d. its seems that even though the engine is the same, the 318d can only achieve around 150bhp. (which might be enough for city driving). can't it bettered any other way in terms of hp and torque to make better than a 320d? my car has the following spec. 318d M Sport - Sapphire Black - Lemon Dakota - 18's Style 193 ps. do the uk msport models have those door handle lights? i don't know of a definite answer. thanks Manish |

welcme to the forums there seem to be a few new members these days good stuff
there are door handle lights on the e92 335i M Sport & e90 320d SE. those are the only 2 i have experience of, so i assume the others do too

Welcome aboard!
Okay the 318d might not have the most power in the world, but you'll have all the styling (inside and out) and the handling prowess of any E90. Power figures have been rising over the past year or so, lets face it the 120 odd hp that the 318d has is as much as any mainstream 2 litre diesel from a couple of years ago. Chipped to 150hp it would be as much as my E46 320d.

There`s no shame in a 318d, I`m picking up a 318d badge tomorrow for mine.
The first thing I would do is get it re-mapped `tho, it`ll make a huge difference to mid range flexibility. Unfortunately it`ll never make more power than the 320d without bigger injectors and a turbo. |

I don't think there is any such thing as a slow BMW these days. Yes, you won't have the shove in the back of a six cylinder model but 120bhp and the torque of a diesel should be fine.
I had a 1.6 Astra as a hire car the other day and I suspect the 318d is significantly quicker in real world driving. Plus with the low C02 and decent fuel economy it is a very good choice for a company car. |

The key thing about the 3 series range is that the handling is the same regardless of the engine choice. So your car will have all the balance and crisp turn in off a 335i. It won't b the quickest thing in the world, but it WILL be a rewarding drive. |

Hi, and welcome from another new member!
There is loads of useful stuff on here and some very informed people to answer any questions. My previous BMW was an E91 320d M Sport. It did have the door handle lights which I suspect are standard, at least on SE and M Sport. You will not be disappointed, I had Black Sapphire and the standard black cloth/alcantara interior, a good combo but requires lots of cleaning! Your choice of Lemon Dakota is spot on! I think the power output on the 318d has increased, I am sure it will be a very comfortable motorway cruiser and V economical too. Great choice. |

Looking at the E91 brochure it seems that only the ES models don't get the door light handles.
